What do you do on stage?

When I first started public speaking, I noticed how nervous speakers often restrict their hand movements or pace aimlessly, which can distract or disconnect the audience. Implementing what's called the 'Lava Game'—imagining pockets and torso as lava zones to avoid—helped me open up my gestures meaningfully, which not only enhanced my confidence but also made the delivery more captivating. Another surprising insight is how laughter can instantly break the ice. Even a quick, light-hearted joke or a self-aware comment during the first 30 seconds can turn a tense atmosphere into a warm, engaged environment. It’s such a simple trick, but it transforms listeners into active participants rooting for you. Movement plays a key role too. Instead of standing rooted or pacing randomly, I learned to move with purpose—walking to different parts of the stage to emphasize points or ask questions creates a dynamic flow and keeps the audience visually connected. It signals that you're confident and in control, steering the conversation. From personal experience, combining these strategies improved not only how my audience perceived me but also how comfortable I felt on stage. Establishing physical presence is less about memorizing lines and more about embodying your message with warmth, humor, and intention. Practicing these techniques can make any speaker more relatable, authentic, and memorable.
