Common Myths About Weight Loss Surgery 🌸

Have you ever pondered the thought of having weight loss surgery? Have you tried using all those weight loss pills, exercises, eating healthy and nothing seems to work for you? That was me. I felt like every time I lost a pound and then stalled all my progress went out the window. Until I decided it was time to take my life back. I had weight loss surgery in 2023 and it was the BEST decision i could have ever made! It’s not for everyone, but it was for me!

Here are some common myths about weight loss surgery! Drop a 💡 if you didn’t know one of them! 🩷

2024/9/16 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started researching weight loss surgery (WLS), I was bombarded with so much information – and misinformation! It felt overwhelming, and I remember wishing someone had just laid out the honest truth for me. That's why I want to share a bit more about what I've learned, especially regarding some of those persistent myths. My hope is to provide a clearer picture for anyone considering this life-changing path. One of the biggest misconceptions I encountered was Myth #1: You'll never be hungry again after WLS. While your hunger signals definitely change, and the intensity might be different, you will absolutely feel hunger. It's about learning to distinguish between true physical hunger and emotional hunger. For me, this was a massive learning curve, retraining my brain and body to respond differently to food cues. Then there's Myth #2: WLS is the 'easy way out'. If only! Surgery provides a powerful tool, but it's far from easy. It demands immense dedication, significant lifestyle changes, and a complete mental shift. It's lifelong work – monitoring what you eat, staying active, attending support groups, and dealing with the emotional ups and downs. There are tough days, and it's a constant effort. It truly is a tool, not a magic cure, requiring serious personal commitment to maintain its benefits. Another one that often causes concern is Myth #3: You'll just gain all the weight back anyway. The OCR mentioned that about 30% of people might experience some regain, which can be disheartening. However, it's crucial to understand that sustained success comes from adopting and maintaining new habits. WLS changes your anatomy, aiding portion control, but it doesn't remove the psychological triggers for eating. With the right support and mindset, it's absolutely possible to maintain your results long-term. And finally, the social fear: Myth #4: You can never eat out again after weight loss surgery. This one is definitely false! Your approach to dining out will change, but you won't be confined to your kitchen. You learn to make smarter choices – perhaps ordering an appetizer as your main, sharing meals, or asking for modifications. Planning ahead, looking at menus online, and communicating your needs can make eating out enjoyable and manageable. I've found most restaurants are very accommodating. Beyond the myths, I often get asked: Why did I have WLS? For me, it wasn't a snap decision. It was a culmination of years of struggling with my health, trying countless diets, and feeling stuck. My physical health was significantly impacted, and I knew I needed a drastic change to reclaim my life and be present for my family. It was a deeply personal choice, driven by a desire for a healthier, more active future, and it has truly transformed my life. Ultimately, Is WLS for everyone? The short answer is no. It's a serious medical procedure with risks and significant requirements. It's for individuals who meet specific medical criteria, have a clear understanding of the commitment involved, and are prepared for extensive lifestyle changes. It's vital to do thorough research, consult with medical professionals, and consider all your options carefully. What was the best decision for me might not be the right path for someone else, and that's perfectly okay. The most important thing is finding the path that empowers you to live your healthiest life.
