The 5-Minute Marriage Meeting even with a toddler

It is so hard to get a minute of peace with your partner when in the mix of parenthood. Toddler always needs help in everything when they think they are little independent lol. We are not morning people. We found it best to have a 5 minute meeting to today about the plans for the next day. Then get to talk about our own days. My husband is a stay at home Dad. I am a working mom. It is a nice moment to talk about what is going on. Seeing how we are taking on the mental load of running our fanily. #cozychats #lemon8challenge #GirlTalk #GirlPOV #marriagelife

... Read moreLife with a toddler is a beautiful, messy whirlwind, but let's be real – it can feel like a constant challenge to find even a moment of peace, let alone quality time with your partner. The mental load of running a family, especially when one parent is working and the other is a stay-at-home parent, can be overwhelming. That's exactly why my husband and I swear by our '5-minute marriage meeting.' It’s not just about logistics; it’s about intentionally carving out space for our relationship. So, what makes these quick check-ins so impactful? Based on our experience, and the basic rules we’ve set, it's about consistency and mutual respect. Firstly, our rule of 'no phones/TV' is non-negotiable. This ensures we're truly present, making eye contact and giving each other our undivided attention, even if it's just for a few minutes. It's amazing how much more you can accomplish and connect when distractions are removed. Secondly, keeping it a 'strict 5 minutes' helps us stay focused and prevents the meeting from turning into a lengthy, often unproductive, discussion. We know we have a limited window, so we get straight to the point. The core of our meeting revolves around a few key 'main topics.' We start with logistics for the next day or week – who's handling school pickups, doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, or specific toddler needs. This proactive planning helps us feel like a team and reduces last-minute stress. Then, we move onto 'feelings (highs and lows)' of our day. This is a crucial part where we just listen to each other without judgment. It’s a safe space to share triumphs, frustrations, or simply vent about a challenging moment. It helps us feel seen and understood. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we always end with 'appreciation.' This means verbally acknowledging something specific we appreciate about each other, whether it's a kind gesture, how they handled a difficult situation, or their effort in managing the household. This small act of gratitude strengthens our bond and ensures we leave the meeting feeling positive and connected. It’s a reminder that even amidst the chaos of parenthood, we are partners supporting each other. While our ideal time is often around 10 or 11 PM after our little one is asleep, the exact timing can shift. The goal is to find a moment that works for both of you consistently. It’s not always perfect, but having a 'positive intent' going into each meeting has made all the difference. This simple daily ritual has been a game-changer for managing our mental load, fostering better communication, and keeping our marriage strong through the beautiful, demanding journey of raising a toddler.

I love this idea! I’m not married, but with 4 kids, my partner and I definitely need a 'daily briefing' like this. 😩 Trying to coordinate schedules with a toddler running around is an extreme sport lol. Definitely going to try stealing 5 minutes for this!
