How long did it take you to graduate?

It took me six years to graduate college, because I switched up my major one too many times and ended up getting pregnant with my daughter. 🤰🏼🎀 watching everybody I graduated high school with graduate from college exactly 4 years after, made feel super behind! ☹️

... Read moreHey everyone! Reading about how long it took me to graduate college really resonated with so many of you, and I wanted to dive deeper into what that journey actually looked like and offer some encouragement. When I first started at the University of Phoenix, like many, I pictured myself walking across that stage in exactly four years, Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology in hand. But life, as it often does, had other plans! Switching my major a couple of times was a big part of it. I remember the anxiety of feeling like I was 'wasting time' or 'falling behind.' It's so easy to compare your journey to others, especially when you see friends celebrating their graduation while you're still deep in textbooks. Then, getting pregnant with my daughter added another layer of complexity and joy to my academic path. Suddenly, I wasn't just a student; I was a mom-to-be, navigating morning sickness and doctor's appointments alongside essays and exams. This experience, however, taught me so much about perseverance and redefining success. Earning my degree became more than just a credential; it became a testament to my resilience. For anyone out there thinking about how to 'earn my degree' when life throws curveballs, here’s what I learned: First, embrace your unique timeline. There's no single 'right' way to complete college. Whether it’s 4 years, 6 years, or even 10, what matters is the dedication you put in and the knowledge you gain. Your journey is valid, and often, a longer path means you're gaining richer life experiences alongside your academics. Second, lean on support systems. For me, it was my family and fellow students. Don't be afraid to talk to academic advisors about flexible course loads, online options (especially helpful with a baby!), or taking a semester off if needed. Many institutions, like the University of Phoenix, are designed to support non-traditional students, offering resources that can make a huge difference. Third, reframe your mindset. Instead of feeling 'behind,' try to see it as a marathon, not a sprint. Every class completed, every paper submitted, every small victory is a step closer to that ultimate goal of earning your degree. The skills you develop – time management, problem-solving, resilience – are incredibly valuable, especially when you're balancing school with personal life. Finally, remember your 'why'. For me, studying Psychology and eventually earning my Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology was a passion. Even when it felt overwhelming, I reminded myself of the impact I wanted to make and the career I envisioned. This motivation kept me going, especially through those challenging moments. So, if you're a #postgradgirlie or a #collegegraduate taking a non-traditional route, know that you’re not alone. Your degree, whenever you earn it, will be a hard-won achievement, and that makes it even more meaningful. Keep pushing, keep learning, and celebrate every step on your path to earning that well-deserved degree!
