I’ve been paying more attention to my heart

At my last checkup, my doctor mentioned that my resting heart rate is low. Not dangerously low, but low enough to raise a few questions. At first, I brushed it off — I’ve dealt with so many mental health battles lately that physical stuff sometimes feels like background noise.

It made me realize how much I’ve been ignoring my body while trying to manage my mind. Depression, anxiety, agoraphobia… those things can keep you stuck in place — physically and emotionally. And slowly, I’ve started to see how everything is connected.

So I’ve been trying to get more active — not in a perfectionist, “new-me” kind of way, but in a gentle, kind-to-my-body kind of way. Short walks. Stretching. Moving just enough to remind my heart, “Hey, we’re still here. We’re still trying.”

Some days it’s hard. Motivation doesn’t come easy when you’re drained mentally. But I’m learning that even a little movement is better than none. I’m not doing it to lose weight or to “snap out of it.” I’m doing it because I want to feel stronger, more grounded, more present in my body.

And maybe — just maybe — help my heart beat a little more confidently.

So here’s to small changes. To slow walks. To deep breaths. To listening to the signals your body sends you and meeting them with patience instead of panic.

Still healing. Still trying. Still showing up — one step at a time.

... Read moreIn today's fast-paced world, it's easy to neglect our physical well-being while managing mental health struggles. Low resting heart rate can be a signal of underlying issues, especially when mental health conditions like depression and anxiety are involved. It’s vital to understand that mental and physical health are deeply interconnected. Engaging in light physical activities such as short walks and stretching can help bridge this gap between the mind and body. These simple movements not only enhance our physical health but can also improve mood and reduce anxiety levels. Creating a routine that incorporates gentle movement is key to fostering heart health and mental clarity. By making movement a priority, you're engaging your body in the healing process. This can be as easy as taking deep breaths or intentionally stepping outside for fresh air. Celebrate small victories, as they contribute to a healthier lifestyle overall. Encouraging mindfulness during these activities can enhance the emotional benefits, helping to ground and center you in moments of stress. It's important to recognize your body's cues and respond with kindness rather than pressure. As you navigate your healing journey, remember that each small step taken towards better health contributes to a greater sense of well-being. Learning to appreciate the synergy between physical movement and emotional resilience can lead to profound changes over time. As you continue to invest in your heart and body, you’ll find greater strength and energy to tackle life’s challenges.
