Tomorrow morning Rupert goes in for his second injection the first of the double-dose portion of his heartworm treatment.
For every injection day, I've made it a tradition to bring something special for the vets and techs. For his first injection, it was heart-shaped cake pops. Tomorrow, it's homemade donuts. 🍩❤️
As we're counting down the days until he's finally cleared, I find myself getting more emotional and more excited about what his future holds.
Rupert isn't the same dog we met that first day. He came straight off the streets and in pretty rough shape. Through months of treatment, rest, patience, and so much love, he's become the happiest little guy. Sweet, playful, goofy, and full of life.
Sometimes it's hard to remember that the dog attempting to zoomy around my house and trying to convince everyone to play with him is the same dog who arrived here needing so much help.
We're not at the finish line yet, but we're getting closer. Every injection, every day of restricted activity, every vet visit is one step closer to Rupert finally getting to live the life he deserves.
And for that, I'll never be able to thank our veterinary team enough….so here’s some donuts. #dogsoftiktok #fyp #vetmed #yorkiesoftiktok #dog
Going through heartworm treatment with a pet like Rupert is an emotional rollercoaster, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. From personal experience, maintaining a routine and giving small tokens of appreciation to veterinary staff really helps keep the morale high during the long process. It not only strengthens the relationship with those caring for your dog but also adds a touch of joy to difficult treatment days. Heartworm disease requires strict limitations on a dog’s physical activity to prevent complications while the medication works its course. I found that creating a calm, comfortable environment at home is crucial to support recovery. Giving your dog plenty of gentle affection but avoiding stimulating play helps ensure the treatment’s success. Treating heartworm is challenging because it requires patience and consistency over several months. Seeing Rupert transform from a street dog in rough shape to a lively, playful companion is a testament to the importance of perseverance and veterinary care. Celebrating milestones—like each injection—with small comforts and gratitude boosts everyone’s spirits. The phrase "HOW LUCKY ARE WE" truly captures the essence of this journey. We are lucky to have access to veterinary care and the opportunity to give Rupert a second chance at life. This reflection helps maintain a positive perspective during trying times. If you’re facing heartworm treatment with your dog, remember you’re not alone. Engage in open communication with your vet, adhere strictly to treatment protocols, and find ways to make the experience meaningful—whether through homemade treats for caregivers or simply extra cuddles for your dog. This approach turns a tough medical challenge into a journey filled with hope and love.
