... Read moreOkay, fellow plant lovers, let's talk about hydrangeas. There’s nothing more disheartening than seeing those gorgeous, lush blooms start to droop and look like they’re absolutely *dying*. I’ve been there so many times, thinking, 'Oh no, my beautiful hydrangeas are gone!' But I've learned some amazing tricks to bring them back from the brink, and I'm so excited to share them, especially since the 'how to hydrate hydrangeas' question pops up so often! First, it's good to understand why these beauties wilt so easily. Hydrangeas have huge leaves, which means a lot of surface area for water evaporation. Plus, their roots aren't super deep, so they need consistent moisture. A hot day or just forgetting to water can turn them into sad, floppy messes in no time. But don’t despair! I promise, most of the time, they just need a really good drink. I learned two fantastic methods that have revived countless wilting hydrangeas for me. The OCR mentioned 'first method: very hot water,' and it sounds counterintuitive, right? But trust me, it’s magic for cut hydrangeas! What I do is grab a vase or container and fill it with very hot water – not boiling, but hot enough that steam is rising. Then, I cut the stem diagonally under running water or directly into the hot water. This prevents air bubbles from blocking water uptake. I then place the stems in the hot water for about 30 minutes to an hour. The hot water molecules are smaller and can travel up the stem more efficiently, shocking the plant into rehydrating. You'll be amazed at how quickly they start to perk up! The 'second method,' which works wonderfully for hydrangeas still in pots or even as a follow-up for cut flowers, involves cold water and a full submersion. The OCR mentioned 'take off all the leaves' and 'submerge the' (stems/flowers). For cut flowers, after the hot water treatment or if they’re just mildly wilted, I’ll gently take off any lower leaves that would be submerged in the water to prevent rot. Then, I submerge the entire flower head and stem (if it fits) in a basin or bathtub filled with cool water for at least an hour, sometimes up to three hours if they're really sad. This allows the plant to absorb water through its petals and leaves directly. After *three hours*, they usually emerge looking refreshed and ready to flaunt their beauty again. Both of these 'water methods' have truly worked wonders for me. While these methods are fantastic for rescue, prevention is key! My top tips for keeping your hydrangeas happy and hydrated are: Consistent Watering: Especially during hot, dry spells. Water deeply in the morning. Location, Location, Location: They love morning sun but appreciate afternoon shade, which helps prevent excessive wilting. Mulch: A layer of mulch around the base helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots cool. Proper Potting: If they're in pots, ensure they have good drainage but aren't drying out too quickly. So, next time you see your hydrangeas looking a bit limp, don't throw them out! Try this hot and cold water combo. It's been a game-changer for me, turning my dying hydrangeas into vibrant beauties, often in just a few hours. You'll feel so accomplished when you see them *revived*!

This whole next week I’ll be on vacation in South Carolina and plan to spend the entire time on the beach reading. I spent a lot of time debating which books I’d want to bring and settled on these three (the last one is a strong maybe but I’m not sure if I’ll get to it). I love a good literary fict
