Travel Tips

✨ Tip 1: Wear shorts.

How it helped me: If you are wearing a short dress, do wear shorts underneath. Why? Because of the Meltemi, a dry northern wind that blows over the Aegean during summer, mainly in July and August (the high season on Mykonos).

✨ Tip 2: Always ask for a menu.

How it helped me: Some restaurants will overcharge you. Don’t pay $150 for an item that’s worth $7.

✨ Tip 3: If you are visiting a beach, go south.

How it helped me: The south coast had the best sand, view and are protected from the regular north winds.

... Read moreWow, it feels like just yesterday I was soaking up the Greek sun! Since my initial recap, I've had so many questions about Mykonos, especially how to truly make the most of a trip there. So, consider this an extended 'Monthly Recap' of my Mykonos adventures, diving deeper into those essential travel tips! One of the biggest questions I get is about the best time to visit Mykonos. Honestly, it depends on what you're looking for! I went in late June, which offered a great balance, but each season has its own vibe. High Season (July-August): This is when Mykonos is buzzing! Expect vibrant nightlife, crowded beaches, and higher prices for everything from flights to hotels and even food. If you love a party atmosphere and don't mind the crowds, this is your time. Just be prepared to book everything well in advance. The Meltemi wind is also strongest during these months, so my shorts-under-dress tip is even more crucial! Shoulder Seasons (May-June & September-early October): This is my personal favorite! The weather is still fantastic, the sea is warm enough for swimming, and the crowds are significantly thinner than peak summer. Prices are also a bit more reasonable. You can still enjoy the nightlife, but you'll also have more space to explore Mykonos Town (Chora) and relax on the beaches. September, in particular, offers a lovely balance of warm water and a slightly calmer vibe. Low Season (November-April): Many businesses close down, and the island becomes very quiet. It's not ideal for a typical beach holiday, but if you're looking for solitude, hiking, and a very authentic local experience without any tourists, it could be interesting. Just know that your options for dining and entertainment will be limited. Beyond timing, let's talk more about getting around and budgeting. Getting Around Mykonos: While the island isn't huge, walking everywhere isn't practical. ATVs/Scooters: These are super popular and offer a lot of freedom. Just be mindful of the winding roads and other drivers, especially if you're not an experienced rider. Always wear a helmet! Buses: Mykonos has a pretty reliable bus system connecting major towns and popular beaches. It's affordable and a great option if you're staying near a bus stop. Taxis: Taxis are available but can be scarce, especially during peak hours or late at night. They can also be quite expensive. Ride-sharing apps aren't really a 'thing' here in the same way they are elsewhere. Rental Cars: If you plan on exploring a lot of secluded spots, a small rental car might be a good idea, but parking in Mykonos Town can be a nightmare. Mykonos Dining & Budgeting: My earlier tip about asking for a menu is gold! Mykonos can be pricey. Eat like a local: Seek out traditional tavernas away from the main tourist hubs. You'll find delicious, authentic Greek food at much better prices. Look for places where locals are eating lunch or dinner. Street Food: Don't underestimate a good souvlaki or gyros for a cheap and satisfying meal. These are perfect for lunch on the go. Supermarkets: If you're on a budget, grabbing some groceries for breakfast or lunch can save you a ton. Fresh bread, cheese, olives, and local produce make for a fantastic picnic. Happy Hour: Some beach clubs and bars offer happy hour deals on cocktails, which can help cut down on drink costs. Remember, Mykonos is an incredible destination, but a little planning goes a long way. By keeping these tips in mind, you're not just visiting; you're experiencing Mykonos like a savvy traveler. Enjoy your Greek adventure!

looking to get off the tourist track in Greece?
Greece has alooooot more to offer than just Santorini and Mykonos (as dreamy as they are). If you’re craving something a little more off the mainstream path—where the beaches are just as stunning, the villages still feel authentic, and the pace is slower—these islands should be on your radar.
