coleus so BIG🤩

At the beginning of spring, I got this as a little 6 inch potted plant. I actually got two but killed the other one the first day I got it.

Thought I was going to lose this one too, but it pulled through and look at it NOW!

These plants can be sensitive to the summer heat, so I planted mine in a more shaded area in my garden.

... Read moreWhen I first started gardening, I thought all plants just needed sun and water. Boy, was I wrong, especially with my COLEUS PLANT! After nearly losing my first one (and actually losing another!), I quickly learned that understanding a plant's specific needs, like its hardiness zone, is absolutely crucial for success. It's not just about getting a plant to survive; it's about helping it truly thrive, like my now-giant coleus. So, what exactly is a hardiness zone? Basically, it's a geographically defined area in which a specific category of plant life is capable of growing, as defined by its climatic conditions, including its ability to withstand the winter temperatures of the zone. The most widely used system is the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, which divides North America into 13 zones based on average annual extreme minimum winter temperatures. Knowing your zone helps you pick plants that will naturally do well in your area, or at least understand what extra care they might need. For a wonderful COLEUS PLANT like mine, this information is key. Coleus are technically tender perennials, meaning they can live for more than two years. However, they are sensitive to cold. In most parts of the United States, including my home state of Pennsylvania, coleus is typically grown as an annual. This means that once the first hard frost hits, they usually won't survive outdoors. My area, for example, is generally in USDA Zone 6b or 7a. Here, if I wanted to keep my coleus going year after year, I’d have to bring it indoors or take cuttings before winter arrives. If you're in a colder zone like mine and want to extend the life of your beautiful COLEUS PLANT, there are a few things you can do. Many gardeners, myself included, will take cuttings from their favorite coleus varieties in late summer or early fall. These cuttings can then be rooted in water or soil indoors, where they can grow as houseplants over the winter. Come spring, you’ll have new, healthy plants ready to go back outside. This is a fantastic way to propagate your favorites and avoid buying new plants every year! Now, if you're lucky enough to live in a warmer zone, typically USDA Zones 10 or 11, your COLEUS PLANT might actually be able to live outdoors year-round as a perennial. Even then, they might appreciate a little protection during unusually cold snaps. And as I mentioned in my original post, even in summer, these plants can be sensitive to intense heat and direct sun, which is why I put mine in a more shaded spot. So, while hardiness zones tell you about winter survival, it’s also important to consider summer conditions and microclimates in your garden. Ultimately, whether you're treating your COLEUS PLANT as an annual or a perennial, understanding its needs in relation to your local climate will make all the difference. It’s what transformed my tiny, struggling plant into the big, beautiful specimen it is today. Happy gardening!
