The English language is wrong and confusing

2024/12/21 Edited to

... Read moreYou know that feeling when you're convinced a word is spelled one way, and then the dictionary (or your 6th-grade teacher, like for me!) tells you it's totally different? It really makes you wonder, 'What makes the dictionary *the right dictionary*?' I mean, who decides these things? It often feels like the English language is just made up, and honestly, sometimes *nothing makes sense*. Take spelling, for example. We have words like 'through,' 'rough,' 'dough,' and 'cough' – all ending with '-ough' but pronounced completely differently! Then there are silent letters, like the 'k' in 'knife' or the 'w' in 'write.' It’s enough to make anyone struggle, especially when you're trying to nail a book report. I remember almost failing 6th grade because I definitely couldn't spell, and sometimes I almost couldn't read because the words looked so bizarre compared to how they sounded. It truly made me question the authority of my 6th-grade English class. And pronunciation! Just when you think you've got a handle on a word, you hear someone say it completely differently. Queries like 'pathetic pronounce' or 'isolate pronounce' pop up because English has so many exceptions. Think about the word 'vast' – its pronunciation can sometimes trip people up depending on their accent or region. It's not just about knowing the letters, but also understanding the subtle nuances of spoken English, which can vary across different dialects of English. This is a common English language problem. Beyond spelling and sounds, English grammar itself can be a maze with its irregular verbs, tricky tenses, and seemingly arbitrary rules. And the vocabulary! We've borrowed so many words from other languages, each bringing its own quirks. It feels like you need a dictionary just to understand the dictionary sometimes! This is one of the biggest reasons why English is so confusing and often feels impossible to master. It makes you think, who does get to decide how to spell something? Is it Miriam Webster? One person? Two people? The truth is, language evolves. Dictionaries aren't static rulebooks; they're records of how language is *used*. They reflect common usage, and new words are added (and old ones sometimes fade) based on how people speak and write. So, in a way, we all contribute to what makes the dictionary 'right' by how we use words. But try telling that to my 6th-grade self who just wanted to pass! If you're also wondering 'why is English so hard to learn?' or 'why is English so confusing?', you're definitely not alone. My biggest tip? Embrace the weirdness! Reading widely, listening to native speakers, and yes, even arguing with your teacher (politely, of course!) can help. Don't be afraid to look things up repeatedly. It's a journey, not a race. And maybe, just maybe, one day I'll write my own dictionary where all the words make perfect sense to me!

If Loving Someone Feels Confusing, Ask Yourself
If loving someone constantly leaves you feeling confused, it may be time to ask yourself a few honest questions. Healthy love should not make you feel like you’re always guessing where you stand. Sometimes clarity doesn’t come from their answers — it comes from the questions you ask yourself.
