Working on my anthurium hybrid breeding project has been a fascinating journey, especially with the meaningful inspiration behind "The Oil Slick." Naming the hybrid after a song by Frightened Rabbit adds a deeply personal touch, connecting the plant’s iridescent beauty to the legacy of Scott Hutchison, whose music helped many cope with mental health struggles. The project is not just about botanical innovation but also about raising awareness for mental health. Donating a portion of the hybrid's profits to a mental health charity makes it even more rewarding. It’s amazing to see how creativity in breeding plants can intersect with meaningful causes. Each hybrid, starting with "The Oil Slick," symbolizes a step toward supporting those affected by mental health issues. On a practical level, hybridizing anthuriums involves patience and attention to detail. Watching the first leaves grow, as I share on Instagram, is exciting—it shows that every new hybrid has potential to thrive and inspire.
