... Read moreMaking your first ever full course meal can feel daunting, but trust me, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience! Like me, you might not be a 'real cook all the time girly,' but taking that leap to create a multi-dish feast is a huge accomplishment. When I set out to make my 1st ever full course meal, I learned so much, and I want to share some tips that helped me, and hopefully, will help you too.
First, don't overwhelm yourself with overly complicated recipes. Start with dishes you enjoy and feel reasonably confident about. My menu of Honey Hot wings, homemade Mac n Cheese, Honey Glazed Carrots, and Garlic Butter Hawaiian Rolls was a great balance of comfort food and relatively straightforward techniques. The key is to choose components that complement each other without requiring complex timing or advanced skills.
Planning is absolutely crucial. Before you even touch a pan, map out your entire cooking process. What needs to marinate? What can be prepped ahead of time (like chopping vegetables for the carrots or grating cheese for the mac n cheese)? Which dish takes the longest to cook, and which can be made quickly at the end? For instance, I knew my wings would take a while, so I started those first, while the mac n cheese could be assembled and baked. The Hawaiian rolls just needed warming, and the carrots cooked relatively fast. This 'mise en place' (everything in its place) approach makes the actual cooking much smoother and less stressful.
Don’t be afraid to taste as you go! This is where you truly become a chef. Adjust seasonings, check for tenderness, and tweak flavors. My mac n cheese, for example, benefited from a few extra pinches of seasoning. And remember, it's okay if it's not Michelin-star perfect on your first attempt. My meal was an 8.5/10, not because it wasn't 'bomb,' but simply because I couldn't eat it immediately after cooking. Sometimes external factors are beyond your control, and that's perfectly fine!
Finally, embrace the process. Cooking a full course meal is about more than just the food; it's about the experience, the learning, and the joy of creating something delicious with your own hands. Whether you're cooking for yourself, a partner, or friends, the effort and love you put into it will shine through. So go ahead, pick your favorite dishes, plan it out, and enjoy the journey of making your own first full course meal. You might surprise yourself with how much you can achieve, just like I did!
