Lines We Cross…. Preview

Amara didn’t laugh with her.

She stood there, jaw tight, eyes scanning Janelle’s body like the danger was already in the room. Pregnancy had sharpened something in her—fear mixed with possession. Love mixed with control.

“That’s not funny,” Amara said. “You don’t see what I see.”

Janelle sighed, shifting her weight. “What do you see, Amara?”

“I see people watching you,” she replied immediately. “I see comments, DMs, people thinking they know you because they watch your stories. I see entitlement.”

Janelle folded her arms over her stomach instinctively. “You knew who I was before I got pregnant.”

“And now you’re carrying my child,” Amara shot back. “That changes everything.”

There it was.

Janelle’s expression softened but her voice didn’t. “It shouldn’t change me.”

Amara stepped closer, lowering her tone. “I’m not trying to cage you. I’m trying to protect what’s mine.”

Janelle’s brows knit together. “See… that’s the part that scares me.”

Amara blinked. “Scares you?”

“Yes,” Janelle said calmly. “Because love isn’t ownership. And pregnancy doesn’t mean I stop being a person who goes outside, who lives, who breathes.”

Silence filled the room.

Amara ran a hand over her face, pacing once before stopping. “You don’t understand how fast things can go left.”

Janelle looked up at her. “Then explain it to me. Don’t just shut me down.”

Amara hesitated. That hesitation told Janelle everything—there was more fear there than she was admitting.

“I almost lost someone before,” Amara finally said. “And I swore I wouldn’t ever be careless again.”

Janelle reached for her hand, pressing it gently against her belly. “Being careful doesn’t mean being afraid of life.”

The baby kicked, subtle but real.

Amara froze, eyes widening as she felt it.

Janelle smiled softly. “See? Even they’re telling you… I’m still here.”

Amara swallowed hard, nodding once. “I just need time to learn how to love you without hovering.”

Janelle leaned into her. “And I need you to trust that I’m strong—even pregnant.”

Amara kissed her forehead, lingering longer than usual.

“Fine,” she murmured. “But if you don’t answer your phone—”

Janelle laughed. “You’re calling back to back.”

“Every time,” Amara said, a small smile finally breaking through.

But deep down, both of them knew—this was only the beginning of how pregnancy would change everything.

Reyes was still around.

That feeling Amara couldn’t shake—the one she tried to explain but never fully could—was standing ten feet behind Janelle as she walked through the park, hand resting on her stomach, headphones low enough to stay alert.

“Janelle.”

Her body went rigid.

She turned slowly and there Reyes was, dressed down, hands visible, expression softer than it had ever been. Too soft. The kind of soft that came with an agenda.

Janelle didn’t respond. She reached for her phone instead, fingers moving fast.

Janelle: Come to the park. Now.

No explanation. She didn’t need one.

“Janelle, we need to talk,” Reyes said quietly, stepping closer. “I’m not here to cause trouble.”

Janelle took a step back. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“It is a must that I—”

The sound cracked through the air before the sentence could finish.

A sharp pop. Too close. Too real.

Reyes’ body jerked as the bullet tore into her side. Her eyes widened in shock before her knees buckled. She hit the ground hard, breath knocked clean out of her.

Janelle screamed.

People scattered. Someone shouted. The park erupted into chaos, but Janelle didn’t move—couldn’t move—until tires screeched against pavement.

Amara’s truck.

She jumped out before it fully stopped, gun already drawn, eyes sweeping the area in pure instinct. When she saw Reyes on the ground, bleeding, she didn’t even flinch.

Her focus was Janelle.

“Get in the truck,” Amara ordered, voice sharp, controlled, terrifyingly calm. “Now.”

“I—Amara, she—”

“I don’t care,” Amara cut in, grabbing Janelle by the shoulders and guiding her toward the passenger side. “Get in so I can take you home.”

Janelle climbed in, hands shaking, tears streaming as Amara slammed the door shut and rounded the truck. Sirens were already echoing in the distance.

As Amara pulled off, she glanced at Janelle, one hand gripping the steering wheel tight enough to turn her knuckles white.

“Did she touch you?” Amara asked.

“No,” Janelle whispered. “She just said she needed to talk.”

Amara exhaled, a slow, dangerous breath. “I told you she wouldn’t stop.”

Janelle looked down at her stomach, then back at Amara. “Someone tried to kill her.”

“And someone could’ve hurt you,” Amara replied. “That’s the difference.”

The truck sped toward home, leaving behind the park, the blood, and the proof Amara had been afraid to say out loud.

This wasn’t paranoia.

It was a warning.

... Read morePregnancy is a transformative experience that not only changes a person physically but emotionally and mentally as well. In the preview of "Lines We Cross…." we see this transformation through the eyes of two characters, Amara and Janelle, whose relationship is tested by fear, love, and external threats. From my own experience, pregnancy brings a heightened sense of vulnerability and protectiveness similar to what Amara is feeling. This can create tension in relationships, especially when emotions mix love with control, as Amara’s fear of losing Janelle clashes with Janelle's desire to live freely. The story poignantly captures that struggle between the natural instinct to protect and the need for trust and independence. I find it relatable how Amara’s vigilance stems from past trauma—something many expectant parents can connect with when faced with the unknown realities of impending parenthood. Moreover, the intrusion of danger embodied by Reyes’ sudden, violent encounter shows how pregnancy can amplify fears of safety, not just for the individual but for the unborn child and loved ones. It’s a stark reminder that pregnancy doesn’t pause life’s harsh realities. The way the author weaves suspense with the intimate moments between Amara and Janelle gives the story depth, making readers understand both the strength and fragility of love under pressure. The themes of ownership versus partnership in love and maintaining one’s identity during pregnancy resonate deeply. Janelle’s assertion that pregnancy doesn’t mean she stops living or breathing highlights the importance of respecting autonomy even in close relationships. Anyone who has been in a similar situation—where love, fear, and personal freedom intersect—will appreciate this delicate balance. In sum, "Lines We Cross…." is a compelling glimpse into the complexities of pregnancy, relationship dynamics, and external threats. The narrative underscores the reality that soon-to-be parents must navigate not only the changes within but also dangers without, all while learning to trust and love courageously.
