Lines we cross….

Amara yanked the door open so hard it slammed against the wall.

“Go,” she snapped, her chest rising and falling fast. “Before I say something I can’t take back.”

Janelle stood frozen, tears blurring her vision. “Amara, please. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. Reyes was just there for me when you—”

“When I what?” Amara spun around, eyes burning. “When I was working? When I was protecting you? When I was holding us together while you were getting close to her behind my back?”

Janelle’s voice cracked. “You’ve been distant. Ever since Reyes disappeared the first time, you changed. You’re always on edge. I felt alone.”

“So you ran into her arms?” Amara laughed bitterly. “Of all people, Reyes? You know nothing about that woman. Nothing.”

Janelle swallowed. “I know how she makes me feel. Safe. Heard. Like I can breathe again.”

“That’s crazy,” Amara said quietly, the anger giving way to something more painful. “I was the one who kept you safe. I was the one who loved you when you were at your worst.”

“I still love you,” Janelle whispered.

Amara shook her head slowly. “No. You love the comfort. You love whoever is easiest in the moment. Love doesn’t sneak around.”

Silence stretched between them, thick and heavy.

Then Amara stepped closer, her voice low and shaking.

“You don’t even realize who Reyes really is, do you?”

Janelle looked up. “What do you mean?”

Amara’s jaw tightened. “She didn’t just ‘disappear’ before. She was running. From people she crossed. From things she did. I found out she’s been using different names in different cities. Clients disappearing after meeting her. Lives ruined.”

“That’s not true,” Janelle said quickly. “Reyes would never—”

“You sound just like me when I defended you to everyone,” Amara shot back. “Blind.”

A knock suddenly hit the door.

Three sharp knocks.

Both women froze.

Amara’s eyes narrowed. “She knows where you live now?”

Janelle’s heart began pounding. “I… I might’ve mentioned it.”

Another knock. Louder.

A calm female voice floated through the door.

“Janelle,” Reyes called softly. “I know you’re in there.”

Amara slowly reached for the door lock.

“You see?” she whispered. “This is how it starts.”

Janelle’s hands trembled. “Amara, you’re scaring me.”

“I’m trying to save you.”

The knob slowly began to turn.

And that’s when Amara realized—

Reyes hadn’t knocked to be invited in.

she already had a key.

The door creaked open halfway.

Reyes stood there calm, composed — not surprised at all to see Amara.

But what shocked Janelle…

was the look that passed between Reyes and Amara.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Old. Familiar. Dangerous.

Reyes smirked first. “Still dramatic, I see.”

Amara’s jaw tightened. “Still manipulating people who don’t know any better.”

Janelle’s head snapped back and forth between them. “What is going on?”

Reyes stepped inside like she owned the place. “You didn’t tell her? After all these years?”

“Tell me what?” Janelle demanded.

Amara let out a bitter laugh. “That Reyes and I didn’t meet through you. We met way before. Back when we were both running the same game.”

Janelle’s stomach dropped. “Game?”

Reyes’s voice was smooth. “We used to set people up. Build trust. Get close. Drain them emotionally, financially… sometimes legally.”

“Stop,” Janelle whispered.

Amara continued, eyes locked on Reyes. “You taught me how to read people. How to make them feel safe. You were the best at it.”

Reyes tilted her head proudly. “Still am.”

Janelle felt like the room was spinning. “So everything between us was fake?”

Reyes stepped closer to Janelle, softer now. “Not everything. You were different. I didn’t plan to fall for you.”

Amara scoffed. “You don’t fall for targets.”

Reyes’ eyes flashed. “You think you were any better back then?”

Janelle backed away. “Amara… were you using me too?”

The silence answered louder than words.

Amara finally spoke, voice low. “At first. I won’t lie.”

Janelle’s breath hitched.

“But I changed,” Amara rushed. “I fell in love for real. I left that life. Reyes never did.”

Reyes laughed lightly. “You left because you got soft.”

“Because I got human,” Amara shot back.

Reyes turned to Janelle. “She was supposed to help me with you. That was the original plan.”

Janelle’s eyes widened in horror. “Help you with me?”

Amara clenched her fists. “I didn’t know it was you when she described the target. When I realized, I tried to back out.”

“And instead,” Reyes said smoothly, “you decided to keep Janelle all to yourself.”

Janelle’s tears fell freely now. “So I was a job. A setup. A prize.”

Reyes stepped close, gently wiping a tear. “You became more than that.”

Amara slapped Reyes’ hand away. “Don’t touch her.”

Reyes smiled. “See? Still possessive.”

Janelle whispered, broken, “Which one of you is telling the truth?”

Reyes and Amara spoke at the same time.

“I love you.” — Amara

“I chose you.” — Reyes

Two different confessions.

One impossible choice.

And the real twist?

Reyes leaned in close to Janelle’s ear and murmured:

“You weren’t the target, sweetheart.”

Janelle froze. “Then who was?”

Reyes’ eyes lifted slowly… to Amara.

“she was”.

It reminds me of situations where trust is tested, and the people we think we know reveal unexpected layers. In real life, relationships can often be intricate webs of emotions and hidden histories, much like Amara, Janelle, and Reyes’ story. What struck me the most was how the characters' pasts heavily influenced their present actions, showing that emotional wounds and unresolved issues can take surprising forms. The story's elements—the idea of running from past mistakes, the blurred lines between love and manipulation, and the challenge of distinguishing genuine affection from convenience—are themes many can relate to when facing complicated personal relationships. For anyone dealing with trust issues or difficult relationship dynamics, this story highlights the importance of communication and honesty. The revelation that Reyes and Amara shared a dark history adds depth to the plot, showing how intertwined lives can affect relationships in unexpected ways. From personal experience, navigating betrayals requires self-reflection and sometimes distancing from those who bring harm, even if love is involved. It’s a painful process but necessary for growth and healing. This story eloquently mirrors that journey, emphasizing that crossing certain lines in relationships can have irreversible consequences. In conclusion, "Lines We Cross" is not just a dramatic tale but a powerful reminder to scrutinize the foundations of our relationships and understand the motives behind people’s actions. It’s a story that resonates beyond fiction, prompting readers to reflect on the authenticity and safety within their own emotional connections.
