Concrete secrets
“So what made you make that move without me?” Aisha asked as they stood on the balcony, the city lights stretching out behind them.
Malcolm stayed silent for a long moment. His jaw tightened as he stared over the railing, avoiding her eyes.
“I… I don’t know,” he finally admitted, his voice unsteady.
Aisha studied him for a few seconds before a faint smirk tugged at the corner of her lips.
“Okay,” she whispered.
The silence between them became louder than the conversation itself. Malcolm knew she didn’t believe him, and truthfully, neither did he. Whatever answer she had expected, “I don’t know” wasn’t it.

“Okay,” she whispered.
The silence between them became louder than the conversation itself.
Aisha let out a slow laugh that carried no humor.
“Nah,” she said, shaking her head. “You know. You just don’t wanna tell me.”
Malcolm rubbed both hands over his face. “Aisha, let it go.”
“Let it go?” Her voice cracked before rising. “You disappeared for three days. Three. Whole. Days. Then I hear from somebody else that you made a move that got everybody talking.”
“I said leave it alone.”
She stepped closer until only inches separated them.
“You think I’m stupid?”
“No.”
“You think I don’t got people too?”
Malcolm finally looked her in the eyes.
“Watch your mouth.”
“My mouth?” Aisha scoffed. “Boy, watch yours. Don’t stand here acting like I wasn’t holding you down before anybody even knew your name.”
His nostrils flared.
“I did what I had to do.”
“For who?”
Silence.
“For who, Malcolm?” she demanded.
His phone vibrated.
One buzz.
Then another.
Then another.
His face lost all color.
Aisha caught it immediately.
“That who texting you?”
He declined the call without answering.
“Ain’t nobody.”
She laughed again, this time louder.
“You are a terrible liar.”
The phone rang again.
Malcolm snatched it from his pocket and turned the screen away before she could see the name.
That was all the confirmation she needed.
“Oh…” she muttered. “So that’s what this is.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I don’t?”
She folded her arms.
“Tell me why every time that phone rings, you look like somebody got a gun to your head.”
He didn’t answer.
The caller hung up.
A text came through almost instantly.
Malcolm read it.
His heartbeat pounded against his chest.
Aisha watched every change in his expression.
“What happened?”
Nothing.
“What happened, Malcolm?”
He swallowed hard.
“We gotta leave.”
She frowned.
“Leave where?”
“Now.”
Before she could ask another question, tires screeched from the parking lot below.
Both of them rushed to the edge of the balcony.
A black SUV came to an abrupt stop.
Four doors opened at the same time.
Nobody got out immediately.
Instead…
Every person inside looked up.
Straight at Malcolm.
