Denisha swallowed the knot in her throat.
She wasn’t there because she wanted to be. She was there because rent was due, bills never stopped, and Blue Hill Lounge had taught her that excuses didn’t pay.
The older man studied her for another second before slowly reaching into his jacket and placing a thick envelope on the nightstand.
“I pay first,” he muttered.
She counted the cash without saying a word. Every bill looked the same after a while.
“You done?” he asked.
She tucked the envelope into her purse and forced herself to keep her expression blank. “Yeah.”
When she stepped back into the hallway a few minutes later, the hotel air felt colder than before. She leaned against the wall, closed her eyes, and let out a slow breath.
Her phone buzzed.
Priest.
She answered immediately.
“Everything good?” His voice was calm, but she could hear the expectation behind it.
“Yeah,” Denisha lied. “I’m on my way.”
“Good. We got a full house tonight. Don’t keep me waiting.”
The line went dead.
As the elevator doors opened, Denisha caught her reflection in the mirrored walls. Makeup flawless. Outfit untouched. Nobody would ever know how much she hated what it took to survive.
When she reached the hotel lobby, a black SUV was parked across the street.
A man in dark sunglasses sat behind the wheel, watching the entrance.
The moment Denisha stepped onto the sidewalk, he lifted a phone to his ear.
“Yeah,” he said quietly. “She just came out of the room.”
Someone else had been watching her all along.
