NANGLEN? Worth bringing your date to?
📍20 Tg Pagar Rd, Singapore 088443
At Nanglen, our forkcast shows 65% chance of actually enjoying a romantic date.
The place serves a menu that leans bold and smoky, with grilled meats and comforting Thai classics. On paper, it checks all the boxes for a casual date but like any forecast, the outcome depends on a few key conditions.
OUR READINGS:
🍽 TASTE - 4.5/5
🍖WOONIE'S MOO PING ($9) - 5/5
Best moo ping we've had at any Thai restaurant so far. The skewers was freshly grilled skewers with a rich marinade. Smoky, savoury and slightly sweet with a caramelised char that hits immediately on the first bite. The meat was tender and warm, with a fragrance.
🧆CRISPY GARLIC PORK ($15) - 2.5/5
Disappointing. The pork came out dry rather than crispy, and the garlic flavour we were expecting which were deep, aromatic, punchy was almost completely absent. For $15 it felt quite pricey given the execution. The dish was super fragrant and garlicky on my first visit but we're not too sure why it was inconsistent.
🍛BASIL FRIED RICE ($12) - 4/5
A solid dish but slightly divided between us. The basil flavour leaned subtle rather than punchy. If you prefer bold, intense dishes you might find it underwhelming. That said, my partner found it aromatic and savoury with a gentle spice kick and umami depth from the fish sauce.
🥘TOM YUM MAMA 1 PAX ($16.80) - 4.5/5
The broth was deeply savoury and fragrant. Richer and more complex than your typical tom yum mama dishes from other places. Loaded with seafood and ingredients, and the one-pax portion was generous enough for two to share comfortably. Mostly fresh ingredients apart from the prawns.
💸 WALLET PRESSURE — 3.5/5
Mid-range pricing with a few dishes sitting slightly higher than similar spots. The basil rice at $12 and garlic pork at $15 lean pricier compared to other Thai restaurants.
🔊 ROMANTIC CLIMATE — 4/5
The restaurant transforms into a bar at night, which changes the dynamic significantly. During the day or early evening it's quiet, well-spaced, and genuinely comfortable for a date. After bar hours the noise level rises and the intimate feel is harder to hold onto.
👬 IMPRESSION INDEX — 4/5
If you stick to the signatures, the food is good enough to make an impression. The moo ping alone is a strong opener, and the tom yum creates a natural sharing moment. It's not the place for a formal or fancy date, but for something casual-intimate with authentic Thai food, it works well.
⚠️ DATE NIGHT ADVISORIES
❤️ Intimate during off-peak hours. Come early evening for the best atmosphere
🔊 Transforms into a bar at night. Arrive before 8pm if you want a quieter experience
💸 Few dishes lean pricey. The moo ping and tom yum offer the best value
🍽 Stick to the signatures. Be careful as some foods are garlicky, prepare mints just in case
