Emotional Alchemy
Naming what you feel can change how it feels.
because the way the brain processes it does.
Research from Matthew Lieberman shows that putting feelings into words activates brain regions linked to language and regulation.
When a reaction stays vague,
it often feels broader and harder to handle.
“Something feels off”
does not give the brain much to work with.
But when the feeling becomes specific —
frustrated, tense, disappointed —
the experience becomes more defined.
This reduces internal ambiguity.
And when there is less ambiguity,
the system does not need to stay as activated.
The feeling is still there,
but it is clearer,
more contained,
and easier to process.
This is not about controlling emotions.
It is about giving the brain
a more precise way to represent them.
