US court orders META and Google to recoup money

U.S. court orders META and Google to recoup over $3 million charged with contributing to plaintiff's social media addiction

The social media industry over the past year has been called very fierce, as many countries have begun to issue and enforce laws to restrict youth use, as well as the fact that service companies have been beset by numerous lawsuits, and this case could be called a turning point in the social industry.

According to the news agency, Aljazeera has noted the progress of the prosecution case of a 20-year-old plaintiff named KGM or Kaley who filed a lawsuit against Alphabet, which owns Google and all related services, against META, a prominent social media ownership company, Facebook and Instagram, jointly charged with intoxicating the plaintiff into social media addiction at such an early age as to cause longstanding mental problems, to the California State Court in Los Angeles.

After the court received the indictment, the court conducted an intensive 40-hour exam on the case for nine days in a row. It was investigated by a number of executives involved in the case, including the Chief Executive Officer of META, Mark Zuckerberg, Instangram Chief Adam Mosseri, and many others. It is worth noting that Youtube executives like Neal Mohan were not called to testify in the investigation.

The companies that have been called to investigate have fully defended themselves. META has confirmed that Kaley's mental health problems are a separate problem from social media use. The main problem is that the company points to a chaotic problem within the plaintiff's family. And the therapist has no indication that the plaintiff's mental problems are caused by any use of social media. At the same time, Youtube, one of the defendants, has come to the defense that Youtube's service is just a video viewing platform, not social media. The victims have pointed out that the accusers are becoming less and less active as they age, saying that the recently launched Youtube Short service was launched in 2020, which the accusers accused of causing the addiction. Indeed, the accusers only watch an average of one minute a day.

Yet, the court decided that all the defendants lost the case and had to pay compensation to the victims for a total of $3 million ($95,820,000). The prosecution's lawyers congratulated the decision, saying that it was a historic warrant, restoring justice to thousands of litigants and children who were victims of social media addiction. While the Youtube defendants rejected the decision and insisted on appealing in the case to correct the misunderstanding and restore their reputation, the other META defendants refused to comment on the media. On the verdict side, other companies that have also been sued in this case, such as Snap and Tikal, have successfully mediated and compensated the victims for damages, and have been withdrawn from being defendants in this historic case.
