Apple removes VK from Russian App Store, asks for clarification
Apple has removed the VKontakte (VK) application, a major Russian social network, from the App Store without prior notice or explanation of reasons, resulting in users being unable to download or install app updates on Apple's devices again.
VK, founded in 2006 and nicknamed "Russian Facebook," says the decision affects tens of millions of Russian users because its services cover social media, messaging apps, video, email and educational platforms, with the view that Apple is limiting users' access to Russian services.
The removal of VK from the App Store comes after Apple previously removed the Max app, a Russian government-backed VK messaging service, from the App Store in early June.
Over the past several months, the Russian government has pushed more citizens and government agencies to turn to the Max app, along with limiting the speed of service of WhatsApp and Telegram, two of the country's most popular messaging apps.
According to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin Palace, Apple's decision was a "surprise" and the Russian government will contact the company for clarification, questioning the platform operator's credibility and its impact on future user confidence.
