Pocket gate? Yes or no?
I had a crazy idea to add a pocket gate during our build but not something that looked like a gate. I wanted it to match our railings so when it’s closed, it looks like an extension of it!
Although we don’t have young kids anymore where baby gates are needed, it’s great for keeping the dog either upstairs or downstairs when we have company over and it doesn’t look clunky! It matches the design so you barely know it’s there!
This is maybe my top feature I came up with for our house! I’ve seen other pocket gates done but they look like gates or not natural to the design of the space.
So what do you think?! Would you plan this into your next renovation or home build?

Pocket gates are becoming a popular choice for homeowners looking to combine functionality with aesthetic appeal. Unlike traditional baby or pet gates that often appear bulky and out of place, pocket gates slide neatly into the wall or match surrounding railings, making them virtually invisible when closed. This design innovation allows for an open, spacious feel while providing necessary barriers for pets or children when needed. In homes without young children, pocket gates serve as an excellent solution to control pet movements—keeping dogs upstairs or downstairs during gatherings without the clunky look of standard gates. When integrated thoughtfully into the home's architecture, such as matching the material and color of existing railings, pocket gates maintain the continuity of the design and add subtle sophistication. Moreover, pocket gates can increase safety while preserving style in various settings, from staircases to room entrances. For those planning renovations or new builds, considering a pocket gate early in the design process allows customization that fits seamlessly with other interior elements. This thoughtful integration ensures that the gate is both a practical feature and a tasteful element of home décor. When selecting a pocket gate, consider materials such as wood or metal that complement existing design themes. Additionally, check for sturdy hardware and smooth sliding mechanisms to guarantee ease of use and durability. With the right choice, pocket gates perfectly balance modern design, practical use, and minimal visual impact, making them a top feature in contemporary home design projects. If you’re looking for a smart home hack that elegantly solves common space and safety challenges, a custom pocket gate could be a game-changer in your next home renovation or build.
