Let’s just say, my kids have no complaints
They don’t talk enough about Black fathers like this.
The ones who show up.
The ones who are not only providers but are present.
I remember when MJ and SJ were babies and we would go to doctor’s appointments together. Almost every single time, someone would comment on how amazing it was that their dad was there.
And while I appreciated the recognition, it always made me pause.
Because this wasn’t a father “helping.” This was a father parenting.
This was a dad who knew their appointments, asked the questions, remembered the details, held their hands, and showed up because they are his children too.
And that same man is still showing up today.
He’s the dad who gets on the floor to play, says yes to the adventures, teaches them to try new things, walks beside them through hard moments, and makes them feel safe enough to always come home to him.
He provides for our family, puts a roof over our heads and food on our table, and carries the responsibility of loving and leading us well.
But his greatest legacy won’t be what he gives MJ and SJ.
It will be the time he spent with them, the moments they shared, the confidence he poured into them, and the example he set.
Most importantly, he leads them toward God. He prays over them, teaches them faith, and shows them what a man who loves the Lord, loves his wife, and loves his children looks like.
Babe, thank you for being the father our children laugh with, learn from, travel with, and feel safe with.
Your presence is their childhood.
Happy Father’s Day to my husband and to every dad who shows up, loves deeply, leads with faith, and reminds us that fatherhood is not just about being there financially, it is about being there fully.

Reflecting on the profound role of present Black fathers, I can personally attest to how transformative active parenting is for a child’s development. It's more than just being there financially; it’s about being emotionally available and engaged in every step of the child’s life. I remember attending appointments with my own father and feeling a deep sense of security knowing he was fully involved — asking questions, understanding the details, and offering comfort. Fathers who get on the floor to play and encourage new adventures create a foundation of trust and confidence in their children. This presence fosters resilience and a positive outlook on life’s challenges. I also appreciate how faith can serve as a cornerstone in many families, where fathers lead by example, praying over their children and integrating spiritual values into daily life. This teaches children about love, guidance, and strength in ways that material support alone cannot. The legacy of these fathers is visible not just in what they provide, but in the memories they build, the lessons they impart, and the safe space they create for their children to grow and flourish. Seeing the active participation of fathers in nurturing roles challenges stereotypes and celebrates a fuller picture of fatherhood especially within the Black community. For many, this involvement includes instilling confidence, walking alongside children during difficult times, and showing unconditional love. These are the moments that truly define fatherhood, making every child’s life richer and more secure. Fathers who embody these qualities remind us that their presence is the very essence of their children's childhood, imprinting values and affection that last a lifetime.
