🚨 PSA: This viral Japanese omurice is back in town due to popular demand! 🇯🇵🍳
If you missed it the first time, now’s your chance! Ikura, the Fukuoka-born restaurant behind those mouthwatering omurice hamburgs, has returned to SoCal for another limited-time pop-up, this time at Chinchikurin Torrance. Their first pop-up back in April drew huge crowds and long lines, so it’s no surprise they’re back for round two! 🔥
One thing I highly recommend is grabbing a seat at the bar so you can watch the chefs work their magic right in front of you. There’s something so satisfying about seeing their signature fluffy eggs being flipped on the open teppan before they land on your plate. 👨🍳✨
I tried two flavors: the Creamy Mentaiko Sauce ($27) and the Demi-Glace Sauce ($23). The mentaiko version is rich, creamy, and packed with savory cod roe flavor. The egg is incredibly soft and runny, and it pairs perfectly with the juicy, well-seasoned hamburg hidden inside. 🤤🍳
As delicious as that was, my favorite has to be the Demi-Glace. It’s also their most popular flavor, and I can totally see why. The sauce is deeply savory with a balanced umami flavor that feels classic and comforting. You can order any of these with or without the hamburg, but I personally think the extra protein makes every bite even better and helps soak up all those amazing sauces. 🍛❤️
Fun fact 🐾: Every omelette gets a tiny paw print at the end! It represents the owner’s dog, Ikura, giving their stamp of approval before each dish leaves the kitchen.
This pop-up is only here for a few months, so don’t wait too long to check it out! Tag or send this video to the person you’d bring to the Ikura pop-up! #omurice #omuricehamburg #torrancecalifornia
Having visited the Ikura pop-up myself, I can attest to the incredible experience of watching the chefs prepare each dish on the teppan. The theatrical flipping of the fluffy eggs and the aroma of fresh ingredients create an engaging and enjoyable dining atmosphere. The Creamy Mentaiko Sauce stood out to me for its unique savory depth derived from cod roe, which offers a pleasant umami punch without overpowering the delicate eggs and hamburg. It’s surprisingly balanced and pairs wonderfully with the tender and juicy hamburg steak inside. On the other hand, the Demi-Glace Sauce provides a comforting, hearty flavor that reminds me of classic Western-style Japanese dishes. The richness and subtle sweetness of the demi-glace perfectly complement the softness of the eggs and the flavorful meat, making it my personal favorite. A special touch that enhances the experience is the tiny paw print stamped on each omelette, symbolizing the restaurant owner’s dog, Ikura. It adds a charming and memorable signature that shows pride and care in their craft. For first-timers, I highly recommend grabbing a seat at the bar to fully enjoy the live cooking performance. It’s a great way to appreciate the skill and precision involved in creating these beautiful omurice hamburg dishes. This pop-up is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy authentic Fukuoka-style Japanese comfort food right in Southern California. Since it’s only available for a limited time, I urge fellow food enthusiasts to visit soon, bring along someone special, and indulge in this flavorful, unique dining experience before it ends.
