Hey everyone! So glad you joined me on my recent Costco haul. As an LSN, CPT, and BSc, helping families navigate the world of nutrition, especially when it comes to snacks for our kiddos, is something I'm really passionate about. My mantra, as you might know, is 'life is about balance,' and that absolutely applies to what we put in our bodies. It’s not about being perfect 100% of the time, but about making informed choices that support long-term health, especially for growing kids like my daughter. When I'm at the store, whether it's Costco or anywhere else, I always have a few key things in mind. First, I'm a detective when it comes to ingredient labels. It's not just about calories or macros; it's about the quality of what's inside. For instance, you might see something that looks healthy, but then you spot 'organic expeller pressed sunflower oil' or other 'seed oils' high up on the ingredient list. While a little bit here and there isn't the end of the world, I try to minimize these in our daily diet. When seed oils are in everything we consume, consistently, that's when we often run into more problems. I lean towards snacks made with healthier fats like 'avocado oil' or those incorporating 'coconut flour' – these are great alternatives. Another big one is sugar. It's often hidden in plain sight! I remember looking at some popular snacks and seeing '8 grams of total sugars' with '8 grams of added sugar.' Wow, that's a lot of sugar, even for a treat! For me, a truly 'healthy snack' should offer more than just empty calories. I love options that use natural sweeteners like 'dates,' which don't cause the same blood sugar spikes. It’s about finding that sweet spot where taste meets nutrition. I look for snacks that offer some value – whether it’s protein, healthy fats, or fiber. For example, brands like 'Amara' smoothie melts are fantastic because they're 'just fruit at this' point, offering natural sweetness and nutrients. 'Siete' is typically pretty good, and while I always check the specific product, they often use better ingredients. Their cassava flour products are great because 'cassavas lower on the glycemic' scale, meaning they don't spike blood sugar as much, which is a huge plus! 'Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers' are also a win, but again, I'm mindful of the 'sunflower oil' content and consume them in moderation. When it comes to my ultimate 'Gabbi Approved' list, I'm looking for clear, simple ingredients. Think 'chia seeds' for healthy fats and fiber, or snacks where 'coconut flour is very low on the glycemic' scale. For a quick protein boost, 'RXBARs' are a pantry staple for us. The only sweetener in them is natural 'dates,' making them a smart choice. So, for my daughter's 'lunches' and after-school snacks, it’s a mix. We might have some of those 'pure carbohydrates' like pita chips sometimes, but I balance them with nutrient-dense options. It’s about teaching her that food is fuel and finding joy in eating well. This balance ensures she gets enough nutrients without feeling deprived. It’s not about being perfect, but consistent progress. I hope this deeper dive into my snack selection 'method' helps you on your next grocery run!
