... Read moreGrowing your own potatoes can be incredibly rewarding, especially when you consider the wide range of varieties available. Popular types include Red Norland, Adirondack Blue, and Goldrush Russet, each offering unique flavors and characteristics. To start, ensure you have the right conditions for planting. Choose a loose, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH range of 5.0 to 6.5, which is ideal for potato growth. Organic compost or a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer can provide the necessary nutrients to your plants, promoting robust development. When it comes to watering, balance is key; keep the soil consistently moist without over-saturating. As your potato plants grow, it's crucial to hill up soil around the base to support tuber formation and prevent greening from sun exposure. Consider using containers such as breathable grow bags or five-gallon buckets, particularly if space is limited. These prevent potential issues with drainage while making harvesting easier. Remember to cease fertilization once your plants begin to flower, as this shift in nutrient supply focuses energy on developing larger tubers. With the right preparation and care, you'll enjoy a bountiful harvest in no time. Happy gardening!

In growing potatoes in my garden this year too. Last year we grew them in the ground but we barely got any potatoes and they were really small. I got growing bags from SHEIN and will be trying them out this year. Hopefully it will help and we’ll get bigger potatoes this year!
