Is That a Mushroom🍄? Let’s Talk Puffballs!
Found this little surprise growing in the yard today — and yes, mushrooms like these pop up when moisture meets rich organic soil (thanks, recent rains!).
This one appears to be a Puffball Mushroom, which can be a friend OR foe depending on the type:
Friend?
If it’s a true puffball (white, firm, solid inside when cut open), it’s edible in its young stage and even used in gourmet dishes.
Some even dry them out and use them as a natural wound coagulant in survival situations.
Foe?
If it has gills or a dark spore mass inside when you cut it — do not eat it. It could be a young, deadly Amanita in disguise.
Always ID mushrooms with an expert or local extension office before consumption.
Why It’s Growing:
Thrives in compacted, low-nutrient, or shaded lawns with decaying organic matter.
Moist conditions and recent yard work like aeration can trigger growth.
How to Organically Remove It:
Remove the entire mushroom including base and spores.
Rake the area and sprinkle in garden lime to raise pH and deter regrowth.
Improve drainage and aerate your soil to reduce fungal buildup.
Add nitrogen-rich compost or fertilizer to speed up organic breakdown.
Even if you don’t want mushrooms in your yard, their presence means your soil is alive and active — nature’s compost crew in action!
