Things I doto stay positive after losing a patient

4/30 Edited to

... Read moreLosing a patient is one of the toughest challenges faced by healthcare professionals, especially those involved in dialysis care. As someone who has experienced this, I found that embracing certain coping strategies helped me maintain a positive outlook even during difficult moments. One key approach is to let your emotions out instead of suppressing them. Whether it means talking with colleagues, confiding in friends, or simply writing your thoughts down, expressing grief creates space for healing. For example, after a difficult dialysis shift, I would take a few moments to reflect on the patient's journey and honor their fight. Engaging in creative activities also proved therapeutic. Simple crafts or hobbies unrelated to work can help redirect focus and reduce stress. This aligns with the idea of 'do something crafty' which I found grounding during overwhelming times. Additionally, connecting with a support network, such as dialysis support groups or forums tagged with #dialysissupport, provides shared understanding and encouragement. It’s comforting to know others experience similar feelings and challenges. Monitoring vital signs and dialysis parameters, like blood pressure and machine readings, demands constant attention. While this technical focus can be mentally taxing, maintaining clear protocols and collaborating with biomedical teams helped ease the burden. I've learned that breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps reduces stress. Overall, staying positive after losing a patient means balancing professional responsibilities with self-care. Prioritizing mental health, seeking peer support, and allowing yourself grace are essential. Through these practices, I continue to find strength and purpose in my role supporting patients on dialysis.
