Burn rules
The Rule of 9 is used to estimate the total burn surface area (TBSA) in adults. The head and neck equal 9%, each arm 9%, anterior trunk 18%, posterior trunk 18%, each leg 18%, and the perineum 1%. This method helps guide emergency treatment and fluid replacement. The Parkland formula calculates fluids as 4 ml × body weight × % burn, with half given in the first 8 hours and the rest in 16 hours. Nursing priorities include airway management, controlling bleeding, IV fluids, and pain control.
