Turning Apple scraps into

Homemade zero-waste apple cider vinegar straight from the cores and peels I've been saving all week.

Sustainable, simple, and totally satisfying! #acv #homemade #SustainableLiving #applecidervinegar #homemadevinegar

Recipe: Zero-Waste Homemade Apple Cider Vinegar

Ingredients:

* Apple cores and peels

* 2 tablespoons sugar to each cup water (or honey, optional)

* 1 cup to 2 tablespoons sugar Filtered water (enough to cover the apples)

* Optional: 2 tablespoons store-bought apple cider vinegar (for starter culture)

Instructions:

1. Place apple cores and peels in a clean glass jar.

2. Dissolve sugar in enough water to cover the apples, then pour over the apple scraps.

3. Add 2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar to kickstart fermentation.

4. Cover the jar with a cloth or paper towel secured with a rubber band.

5. Let sit at room temperature for 2-3 weeks, stirring every few days.

6. Taste occasionally; once it reaches a tangy vinegar flavor, strain out the solids.

8. Store the finished vinegar in a sealed bottle at room temperature.

Bonus: Save a little from this batch to start your next jar keeps the cycle going forever!

... Read moreUsing apple cores and peels to create homemade apple cider vinegar (ACV) is an excellent way to reduce food waste and embrace a sustainable lifestyle. Beyond just being eco-friendly, homemade ACV offers a pure, chemical-free vinegar that can be used in cooking, natural cleaning, and even health remedies. From personal experience, saving apple scraps throughout the week doesn’t require extra effort—it simply means collecting what usually goes to the compost or trash. When making ACV, the key is patience. The fermentation process takes 2 to 3 weeks, during which natural bacteria turn the sugars into acetic acid. Stirring every few days not only helps prevent mold but also ensures even fermentation. Adding a store-bought raw ACV as a starter culture can speed up the fermentation, but it’s optional. The sugar or honey acts as fuel for the beneficial microbes, so don’t skip it. Once you reach the desired tangy flavor, straining out solids ensures a smooth vinegar. Storing your finished ACV at room temperature is safe as long as it’s sealed properly. Plus, saving some from your batch to start the next one creates an endless cycle of zero-waste vinegar making. Incorporating homemade ACV into your daily routine has multiple benefits. It can be used as a salad dressing base, a natural preservative, or even added to drinks for digestion support. Many find it a great ingredient for DIY beauty treatments like hair rinses or skin toners too. This method not only gives you control over the ingredients but also connects you to traditional food preparation techniques. With just a few simple ingredients and a bit of time, you transform kitchen scraps into something valuable and sustainable—something worth trying for anyone interested in homemade and eco-conscious living.
