Besties in the making!!!
Introducing a new puppy to an older dog can be a delicate process, but it’s incredibly rewarding when a strong bond forms between them. In my experience, patience and understanding are key. Initially, our older dog wouldn’t even make eye contact with the new puppy, which is quite common as older dogs may feel unsure or threatened by the new arrival. To help them get comfortable, we made sure to introduce them in a calm and neutral environment. Short, supervised meetings helped them get used to each other’s presence without feeling overwhelmed. Positive reinforcement, like treats and praise for calm and friendly behavior, encouraged the older dog to gradually accept the puppy. It’s important to give both dogs individual attention so the older pet doesn’t feel neglected and the puppy understands boundaries. Over time, we saw noticeable improvement: from avoiding eye contact to curiosity, and finally to affectionate interactions. Watching them become "besties" has been a truly joyful experience that highlights the power of gentle introductions and consistent care. For anyone bringing a puppy into a home with an older dog, be patient and observe their cues. Each dog’s personality will influence the timeline, but with love and consistency, they can build a beautiful friendship that enriches your whole family’s life.
