I thought I had Freida figured out. I was wrong. Again.
Giving The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden 3.5 stars and here is why. The way this plot builds over time and circles back to earlier moments to deepen the present day story is genuinely masterful. I was convinced I knew who the murderer was and then Freida did exactly what she always does and pulled the rug out completely. My only note is that the book runs a little longer than it needs to but the twist at the end earns it. If you love a thriller that keeps you second guessing yourself right up until the last page this one delivers.

Reading The Boyfriend truly draws you into a suspenseful narrative that cleverly circles back to earlier plot points to add layers to the story. One thing I particularly appreciated was how the author, Freida McFadden, skillfully builds tension by playing with the reader’s expectations. I found myself second guessing the identity of the murderer multiple times, which kept the suspense alive. The portrayal of Sydney, navigating dating apps and facing the shocking murder of a friend, adds a relatable dimension to the novel. As someone who enjoys thrillers with psychological depth, I found the exploration of suspicion and interpersonal relationships engaging. The theme of resilience amid uncertainty is woven subtly throughout the book, enhancing its emotional impact. Although the book felt a bit longer than necessary at times, the pacing slowed just enough for me to absorb the complexities of the plot and characters. The payoff with the final twist was worth the journey, delivering an ending that surprised me and added a fresh perspective on the story. This book is a great pick for readers who enjoy suspenseful thrillers that not only entertain but also challenge their perceptions. If you’re part of the #BookTok or #readingcommunity, this title is definitely a conversation starter. Freida McFadden’s ability to keep readers off-balance until the last page makes The Boyfriend a satisfying read for thriller enthusiasts who appreciate well-crafted mysteries with a human touch.
