Apps I love as an adult ADHD ✨🌸

📚 BeFreed

This ADHD-friendly book summary app has honestly changed how I read. It turns nonfiction into 30-min summaries, 20-min podcast explainers, and even 10-min flashcards that actually stick. I’ve finished more books this month than I probably have all year—zero guilt, zero overwhelm. If your brain struggles with focus but still craves learning, this app is for you. I’ve been recommending it to every neurodivergent friend I know.

🎧 Endel

Custom soundscapes that match your mood or focus level. I use it to block out chaos and actually concentrate. Bonus: it feels like spa vibes for your brain.

⏱ one sec

This one’s genius. Every time I try to open a distracting app (like IG or TikTok), it forces a deep breath + delay. Rewires your habits without guilt.

💬 How We Feel

Mood check-ins that don’t feel cringey. Helps me pause and name what I’m feeling—essential for emotional regulation.

🧠 Tiimo

Visual daily planning app that doesn’t overwhelm me. Clean, aesthetic, and made for neurodivergent brains. I use it to structure my day without getting frozen.

🪴 Finch

A self-care pet that makes doing basic tasks feel rewarding. You set small goals, your pet grows, and you don’t feel like a failure when you miss one.

... Read moreOkay, so I've already shared how much I adore the 'one sec' app in my list of ADHD-friendly tools, but honestly, it deserves a deeper dive. When I first heard about it, I was skeptical. Another app to solve my app addiction? But this one is genuinely different, and it's become a cornerstone of my ADHD management strategy, especially when it comes to those endless social media scrolls. For anyone with ADHD, the impulse to seek stimulation is strong, and platforms like Instagram, TikTok, or even just checking emails can become huge time sinks. Before 'one sec,' I'd find myself mindlessly opening these apps, often without even realizing it, and then losing 20, 30, or even 60 minutes in a blink. It was frustrating and led to a lot of guilt and a feeling of being constantly behind. The genius of 'one sec' is its simplicity. It doesn't block apps entirely, which always felt too restrictive for me. Instead, it introduces a deliberate, customizable delay every time you attempt to open one of your designated "distracting" apps. When I tap the Instagram icon on my phone (just like you might see on those app icon screenshots!), instead of instantly loading, a screen pops up asking me to take a deep breath. It lasts only a few seconds – I've set mine to 5 – but those few seconds are absolutely transformative. This brief pause creates a crucial moment for my ADHD brain to catch up. It interrupts the automatic, impulsive action. It gives me just enough time to ask myself, "Do I really need to open this right now? Or am I just looking for a dopamine hit because I'm avoiding something important?" More often than not, that little window of reflection is enough for me to close the app and redirect my attention to what I was supposed to be doing, or to simply grab a glass of water, or stand up and stretch. It's like a tiny, gentle intervention every time my brain tries to autopilot into distraction. I've experimented with the delay time, and for me, 5 seconds is perfect – long enough to create that mental space, but not so long that it feels annoying or makes me bypass it. I've linked it to my most notorious time-wasters: Instagram, TikTok, and even my email app during focused work blocks. The app seamlessly integrates with your phone's system, so it genuinely feels like a built-in feature, not a clunky workaround. What I appreciate most is the "no guilt" aspect. It's not about shaming myself for wanting to check social media; it's about building a better habit and empowering conscious choice. It's a tool that respects my need for occasional breaks but helps me prevent those breaks from spiraling into hours of lost productivity. If you're an adult with ADHD constantly battling the siren call of distracting apps, I truly believe 'one sec' could be the simple, yet profound, shift you've been looking for. It's been a total game-changer for my focus and peace of mind!
