A year ago, I was told that 'going solo' would make things harder for me.
Less support. Less credibility. Fewer opportunities.
I'm glad all of that was NEVER true.
Since stepping out on my own, I've taught internationally, built new teams, collaborated with many artistes and teachers, and met some of the most supportive people in my dance journey.
Not every lesson was easy, but these 5 things were completely unexpected.
If you've ever considered starting out on your own project, changing direction, or building something independently, this one's for you.

From personal experience, stepping out independently helped me overcome the fear of diminished support. Instead, I found that being solo pushed me to reach out and collaborate more broadly than ever before. This led to exposure to new dance styles, teaching methods, and a supportive community that enriched my artistic journey.
I initially worried that going solo might close doors, but it actually clarified my unique identity and strengths in the dance scene. Rather than being a handicap, independence opened unexpected doors and let me build authentic relationships with other independent artists eager to collaborate. This spirit of collective growth helped me become a better team player within my community.
Another important lesson was handling perception. Some might assume solo means difficult or failed partnerships, but focusing on genuine connections and serving those who value your work helps your reputation grow on merit. Embracing the freedom of not being tied down allowed me to evolve creatively and professionally at my own pace, knowing that opportunities often need time to align.
For anyone contemplating their own solo adventure, remember it doesn't mean going it alone. It means embracing your individuality while building collaborative networks that celebrate diversity and mutual support. Taking risks on yourself may challenge old beliefs, but it offers a path to discover resilience, creativity, and a strong sense of purpose.
