How many cards fit in an ETB?

Short answer it’s 570

Long answer

I started out with counting out 100 and then stacked a similar amount next to each one which got us to the first ETB pic

Then I counted out 50 seeing as how there wants a lot of room left

That got us to the 2nd ETB pic, there was still quite a bit of room so I tried for 40 which would have been a very tight squeeze so cut that back to 20 and that got us to our final ETB pic

I’m sure 580 would fit but the cards would be tight which I don’t believe would do that cards any good.

Hope you found this useful! Off my LGS to try and sell some bulk! Wish me luck!

... Read moreAfter spending time painstakingly counting Pokémon cards to determine the comfortable capacity of an Elite Trainer Box, I realized there's so much more to consider than just a number! While knowing that around 570 cards fit perfectly is super helpful for quick storage and transport, understanding the nuances can really elevate your collection management. For example, when I was sorting through my own bulk, I often wondered if I should sleeve cards like my extra Slugma or Boomerang Energy before putting them in an ETB. The truth is, whether your cards are sleeved or unsleeved makes a huge difference to the total capacity. If you're planning to store unsleeved common cards, you might squeeze in a few more than 570, perhaps pushing closer to 600, though as the original experiment showed, it gets very tight and risks damaging the cards. But if you're like me and prefer to protect even your bulk rares or specific playable cards like Ting-Lu or Munkidori, then sleeves will definitely reduce the number. A standard penny sleeve adds a bit of thickness, and if you're double-sleeving (which I sometimes do for my more valuable cards like a shiny Skarmory or a full-art Hassel), the count will drop significantly. I've found that with single-sleeved cards, an ETB typically holds around 400-450 comfortably. It's a trade-off between protection and sheer volume. Another aspect to consider is how you organize your cards within the ETB. Are you just dumping them in, or are you using dividers? Most ETBs come with a few cardboard dividers, which are fantastic for separating different sets, types, or even just keeping your common, uncommon, and rare bulk separate. While dividers take up a tiny bit of space, the organizational benefit far outweighs the slight reduction in card capacity. I personally use them to keep my energy cards separate from my trainers, and Pokémon cards like Clefairy from the others, making it much easier to find what I need later. Beyond just the number, thinking about the purpose of your ETB storage is key. Is it for long-term bulk storage? Then maybe maximize unsleeved cards. Is it for transporting a deck plus some trade binders to a local game store (LGS)? Then you'll want to prioritize sleeved, valuable cards and possibly fewer overall. I often use an ETB to carry my current deck and some extra singles I'm thinking of playing or trading – in that case, capacity isn't about bulk, but about accessibility and protection for specific cards. While ETBs are iconic and readily available, they aren't the only storage solution. For truly massive bulk collections, larger BCW card storage boxes are more economical. For individual decks, dedicated deck boxes are perfect. But for that sweet spot of semi-bulk, short-term storage, or transport, the ETB is king. Just remember that 570 comfortable capacity for unsleeved cards is a great benchmark, and adjust downwards if you're adding sleeves or dividers to keep your collection, whether it's full of common Slugma or rare Hassel, in top condition!
