The Mass-Observation Principle
Without rest mass there'd be no matter, no clocks, no time, and no us.
From my experience diving into physics, the concept that mass is fundamental not only to matter but also to the flow of time is truly fascinating. Without rest mass, particles such as photons and gravitons exist without experiencing sequential time—they only see 'simultaneous' emission and absorption events. This means they cannot form memories or act as observers, making sequential causality impossible for them. This topic deepens when considering how massive particles, moving slower than light, experience a positive flow of proper time. This sequential time allows for the perception of 'before and after' and enables memory formation, identity, and causality—all essential for observers like us. Thus, mass acts as a geometric anchor, confining our perception to a 4-dimensional slice of a higher-dimensional structure, often referred to in advanced theories like Grassmannian geometry. Understanding this principle helps clarify why time as we perceive it only unfolds in the presence of mass and why massless particles perceive reality very differently. It sheds light on why clocks, matter, and us depend intimately on rest mass, making this principle a cornerstone of both physics and our experience of reality at a fundamental level.
