How do I fill this space?

I moved out now- she eventually stopped going behind the stove. thank you all for the comments, suggestions and likes :)

I just got a cat, and she keeps crawling in this space along with behind my oven. What can I do to fill this space to prevent her from going back there?

* I rent this place, I can’t buy a new stove.

* The stove is small since it’s a studio apartment

* I can’t move the stove over or I won’t be able to use 2 of the stove top

2025/8/17 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so you've got a curious kitty who loves exploring behind your stove, just like mine did! It's super stressful, right? Especially when you see that narrow gap between your white kitchen stove and the countertop, just begging for a cat to squeeze through. I've been there, constantly worrying about my fur baby getting stuck or even burned. Here are some of the best renter-friendly solutions I discovered to keep them out of that forbidden zone and off the stove entirely! Blocking the Space Behind and Next to the Stove: DIY Cardboard or Foam Board Cutouts: This was my first attempt, and it actually worked pretty well for a temporary fix! Measure the exact dimensions of the gap – both width and height. Cut a sturdy piece of cardboard or foam board to fit snugly. You can even cover it with contact paper to make it look nicer. It's cheap, easy, and totally renter-friendly as it causes no damage. For extra stability, I used strong, removable command strips to secure it to the wall or the side of the cabinet. Tension Rods and Fabric/Mesh: If your gap is wide enough, strong tension rods can be a savior. Place one or two horizontally across the opening and then drape or attach a piece of sturdy fabric, pet-safe mesh, or even a flexible plastic sheet. This creates a barrier that's easy to remove if you ever need access, but tough enough to deter a curious cat. Repurposed Storage Bins or Bookshelves: For larger spaces, I've seen people use narrow, tall storage bins or even small, cheap wire shelving units turned on their side. The goal is to create a physical block that the cat can't get around or over. Just make sure whatever you choose is stable and won't tip over. Appliance Gap Fillers: Did you know they make specific gap fillers for appliances? While some are designed for the top, you might find flexible silicone or metal strips that can be wedged into the side gaps. Always check if they're heat-resistant and safe to be near the stove. **Keeping Cats Off the Stove Top (and Preventing Them from Staring Under):** Even if the gap is blocked, cats might still jump on the stove. Here’s what helped me: Aluminum Foil or Double-Sided Tape: Cats generally dislike the crinkly sound and texture of aluminum foil. Covering your cold stove burners with foil can be a great deterrent. Similarly, double-sided sticky tape (pet-safe kind!) on the edges of the stove can make it an unpleasant landing spot. They usually jump once, dislike it, and learn to avoid it. Motion-Activated Sprays: There are pet-safe motion-activated air canisters that let out a harmless hiss of air when a cat approaches. Placing one strategically near the stove top (when it's off, of course!) can train them to stay away without you having to intervene constantly. Provide Alternative High Perches: Cats love high places. If they're jumping on the stove, it might be because they're seeking a vantage point. Invest in a tall cat tree or clear off a sturdy shelf for them to perch on instead. Make it more attractive than the stove! Secure Toys & Engage in Play: If your cat is constantly staring under the stove or trying to retrieve *cat toys that went under the stove*, it might be a sign they're bored or looking for misplaced treasures. Make sure to pick up toys after play sessions. Also, engage them in interactive play sessions daily with wand toys to redirect their hunting instincts. This can reduce their desire to explore forbidden zones for "prey." Remember, consistency is key! It took my cat a little while to get the hint, but with these strategies, she eventually stopped her stove adventures. You've got this!
