From my experience as a cut flower gardener, I've found that the most rewarding gardens are those where patience is practiced and growth is truly allowed to take place. Often, we feel compelled to cut flowers prematurely either to showcase our gardening skills or to constantly harvest blooms. However, this can stunt the plants’ natural growth and reduce the overall health of the garden. I've learned to resist the urge to constantly cut flowers just to prove something. Instead, I focus on providing my plants with ample time to develop fully. When I let flowers remain on the plants longer, they strengthen themselves, develop more vibrant colors, and even produce more blooms over time. This approach aligns with the idea that "sometimes the best thing we can do is let things grow for the sake of growing." Additionally, allowing flowers to mature and stay uncut can have benefits beyond aesthetics. It supports pollinators and creates a more balanced ecosystem within the garden, which in turn contributes to the long-term sustainability of my cut flower garden. If you are a fellow gardener or cut flower enthusiast, try embracing this philosophy: celebrate the natural growth and cycles of your plants without feeling pressured to continually harvest. You'll likely notice a more vibrant, resilient garden that brings you joy beyond just the cut blooms. Nurture your flowers with patience, and watch your garden truly flourish.
