Living in Maryland, I truly appreciate hardy perennials that can withstand the unpredictable winters while still adding vibrant life to my garden. Some of my absolute favorites include the peony, known for its phenomenal fragrance and stunning blooms that make any bouquet stand out. Astilbe adds whimsical movement with its unique textures and cute color palettes, which bring charm and softness to any landscape. Foxglove is another gem, often compared to snapdragons, and is a bee favorite – its fairy tale-like appearance is an enchanting addition to gardens. I also love calla lilies, which are incredibly elegant and favored in wedding bouquets due to their unique shapes. Spirea serves as a hardy filler with great movement and lovely colors, while yarrow stands out for its extensive color range and toughness, making it truly a workhorse in any garden. Early bloomers like hellebores are wonderful for adding interest when few other flowers are blooming, especially with their unique foliage and cool look. These perennials not only survive Maryland winters but thrive, offering reliable beauty year after year.
