Types of Headaches & How to Relieve Them

There is almost nothing worse to me than a headache. Getting one can take what would have been a great day and turn it into a day spent hiding in a dark room with a cold washcloth on your face. If you get headaches from time to time, it can be helpful to know what is causing them. Sometimes it's tough to tell from location alone, but these four common headaches can easily be identified by location.

Migraine

- 25% of all headaches are actually migraines.

- Genetics can play a big role in frequency of migraines, but other common causes include dehydration, inadequate sleep, skipping meals, and hormonal changes.

- Living a healthy lifestyle, drinking plenty of water, and managing stress can help reduce the frequency of migraines.

- If you are experiencing a migraine, go to a dark place, lay a cool cloth over your eyes, and drink some water.

Tension

- Tension headaches are also very common.

- Common causes include eye strain from staring at screens, poor posture, lack of exercise, and dehydration.

- They usually only last for 30 minutes. To reduce this time, take ibuprofen and drink some water.

Sinus

- Sinus headaches are actually quite rare, but other headaches can easily be mistaken for them.

- In addition to pain behind the nose and cheekbones, sinus headaches usually include, pressure, nasal discharge, fever, ear pain, and coughing.

- Treatment include plenty of fluids, antihistamines, and rest.

Cluster

- Cluster headaches usually present with pain behind one eye and are named because they come and go in clusters of reoccurring headaches.

- The cause of cluster headaches isn’t known, but alcohol and smoking seem to increase their occurrence.

- The best treatments for cluster headaches are oxygen therapy, injections, and medication that need to be prescribed by a doctor.

In general, the most important things you can do to prevent headaches are to:

- drink enough water

- eat a balanced diet

- exercise frequently

- sleep 7-9 hours per night

- reduce alcohol consumption

Note: if you are experiencing frequent headaches, it's important to visit your primary care physician to rule out serious health conditions. Frequent headaches are not normal!

... Read moreHey everyone! 👋 If you're anything like me, you've probably spent countless hours trying to figure out why your head is pounding. It's not just that you have a headache, but where it hurts can tell you so much about what's going on! I've learned that pinpointing the exact location of the pain is a game-changer for finding the right relief. Let's dive a bit deeper into what those specific spots might mean for your headache. When Your Sinuses Scream: Forehead, Cheeks, and Eyebrows Many of us mistakenly think every headache that feels like pressure in the face is a sinus headache. But true sinus headaches are actually quite distinctive! If you're experiencing pain and pressure in your forehead, around your eyes, across your cheekbones, or even in your eyebrow area, it could definitely be your sinuses acting up. This pain often feels like a deep, constant pressure, and it might worsen when you bend forward. Unlike a typical tension headache, you'll likely also have other sinus symptoms like nasal congestion, discharge, or even a fever. For relief, I often find that steam inhalation (think a warm shower or a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head!) can help clear things up, along with plenty of fluids. The 'Tight Band' of Tension: Forehead and Temples Ah, the classic tension headache! This is the one that feels like a vice tightening around your head. The pain is usually a dull, aching sensation that wraps around your forehead and temples, sometimes extending to the back of your head. I know for me, these often pop up after a long day staring at my computer screen or when I'm feeling particularly stressed. Poor posture, lack of sleep, and even dehydration can be big culprits. Gentle massage on your temples and forehead, taking a break from screens, and doing some neck stretches can really make a difference. Sometimes a warm compress on the forehead helps too! The Migraine's Stealthy Attack: Behind One Eye or One Side of the Forehead Migraines are a whole different beast, aren't they? While they can manifest in various ways, a common and tell-tale sign is throbbing pain located behind one eye or intensely on one side of your forehead. This isn't just a regular ache; it's often accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light, sound, or even smells, and sometimes nausea. When a migraine hits me, I know I need to retreat to a dark, quiet room with a cool cloth over my eyes. Catching it early is key, so pay attention if you start feeling that specific pulsing behind your eye or on one side of your head. The Urgent Signal: High Blood Pressure Headaches Now, this is an important one that often gets overlooked. While most headaches aren't a sign of dangerously high blood pressure, sometimes an acute spike in blood pressure can cause a headache. These headaches are typically characterized by a severe, throbbing pain, often felt at the back of the head. It's usually not a subtle ache but a sudden, intense pain. If you're experiencing a sudden, severe headache, especially if you have other symptoms like vision changes, confusion, or numbness, please don't hesitate to seek medical attention immediately. It's crucial to get your blood pressure checked, as very high blood pressure can be a serious health risk and requires professional diagnosis and treatment. This isn't something to try to self-diagnose or treat at home. Remember, our bodies are always sending us signals. Understanding where your headache pain is can provide crucial clues, but always listen to your body and consult a doctor if your headaches are frequent, severe, or accompanied by unusual symptoms. Stay healthy!
