Detroit travel tips for first timers! 🤍

Detroit is the biggest city in Michigan with a population of 630,000+ people. From tall buildings to delicious restaurants and things to do, here's what to consider if this is your first time visiting Detroit.

✈️ The airport is about a 25 minute drive with traffic. Ubers will cost around $30-$35. You don't necessarily need a car, but it's more convenient and easier to get around with one since not everything is walking distance from each other.

🏨Parkers Aly is probably where you want to stay, if you are not on a budget, since it is centralized to restaurants, bars, and great places to stay. Shinola is my hotel of choice but if you are on a budget, there are definitely other cheaper alternatives.

You never know about the weather in Michigan, so make sure you always have a light jacket if you're not visiting in the Winter! It can be sunny one hour, and then windy the next.

Enjoy your time in Detroit!

Detroit
2024/11/21 Edited to

... Read moreHaving navigated Detroit for my own business trips, I've picked up some essential tips that go beyond just general tourism. Whether it's your first time in the Motor City for work or you're looking to refine your travel strategy, here’s what I’ve learned to make your trip productive and enjoyable. Getting Around for Business: Beyond the Airport Shuttle While the original advice about Ubers from the airport costing around $30-$35 is spot on, for business travelers, efficiency is key. Once you're in downtown Detroit, especially if your meetings are spread out, having a reliable transportation plan is crucial. I found that while a personal car offers flexibility, ride-sharing services are generally plentiful. However, for tight schedules, consider pre-booking a car service for important appointments. The QLine, Detroit's streetcar, is also a fantastic option if your meetings are located along its route, offering a quick and affordable way to get between Midtown and the riverfront during business hours, avoiding potential traffic delays. I always factor in a little extra travel time, as Detroit traffic, like any major city, can be unpredictable, especially during rush hour. Choosing Your Business Accommodation Wisely Staying in the right location can significantly impact your business trip. The advice to stay in areas like Parker's Aly is excellent; it truly is centralized with great dining and entertainment, perfect for client dinners or unwinding after a long day. From my experience, hotels in the Downtown or Midtown areas offer the best balance of proximity to corporate offices and convenient amenities like business centers and reliable high-speed internet – an absolute must for any business traveler. While Shinola is a top pick for its style and location, don't hesitate to explore other well-regarded hotels in these districts that might better fit your company's budget while still offering comfort and accessibility. I always check reviews for Wi-Fi quality before booking! Dining & Networking: Making the Most of Detroit's Culinary Scene Detroit’s food scene is vibrant, and it offers some fantastic spots for business meals. For a sophisticated client dinner, many restaurants around Parker's Aly or in the bustling downtown Detroit area provide excellent ambiance and cuisine. Think about places that offer a good mix of privacy for discussions and an atmosphere that impresses. For a quick but quality business lunch, I often seek out cafes or bistros near my meeting locations. Post-meeting, if you're looking to network or simply relax, many establishments near Campus Martius Park offer lively atmospheres, often with live music or great happy hour specials, providing a perfect backdrop for informal discussions. Staying Productive & Connected Reliable connectivity is non-negotiable on a business trip. Beyond checking hotel Wi-Fi, I always carry a portable charger for my devices – you'd be surprised how quickly your phone battery drains with navigation, emails, and calls. If you find yourself with some downtime between meetings and need a quiet space to work, Detroit has some charming coffee shops downtown that double as excellent temporary workspaces. It’s a great way to catch up on emails or prepare for your next presentation. Remember, these practical "Detroit travel tips" can make all the difference in a smooth, successful business visit.
