Parenting AuDHD kids

Has anyone read 1-2-3 Magic?

I first heard of it a few weeks ago when I was working with a family that has a child in a headstart program where the school mentioned this being the technique all the staff are trained to use.

Thoughts???

1-2-3 Magic is a discipline strategy developed by Dr. Thomas Phelan, designed for parents to manage children’s behavior in a calm, consistent way without yelling or nagging. The key concepts are:

1. Counting for undesirable behavior (1-2-3): When a child misbehaves, parents give them a count, starting with “That’s 1,” then “That’s 2” if the behavior continues, and finally “That’s 3.” If the child reaches “3,” they face a consequence, such as a time-out or loss of a privilege. The counting approach helps to reduce emotional reactions and gives children a chance to self-correct.

2. No talking, no emotion: The idea is to remain calm, with minimal discussion or emotional engagement. The parent simply counts without getting drawn into arguments or explanations, which helps avoid power struggles and keeps the interaction neutral.

3. Positive reinforcement for good behavior: In addition to managing undesirable behavior, 1-2-3 Magic encourages parents to acknowledge and reward positive behaviors to reinforce them. This can include praise, attention, or other positive reinforcements.

The method is simple, practical, and helps children learn self-regulation, while giving parents a clear, predictable system to follow.

This technique is supposed to be helpful in managing HF AuDHD children, but it has its limitations.

The 1-2-3 Magic program may not work effectively for every child, especially those with specific behavioral or developmental needs that require a more nuanced or tailored approach. Some examples include:

1. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Many children on the spectrum may struggle with understanding the abstract nature of counting as a consequence or may not respond well to non-verbal cues. They may need more explicit explanations or tailored behavioral interventions that are more structured and predictable.

2. Children with ADHD: Kids with ADHD often struggle with impulsivity and may find it difficult to stop a behavior within the 1-2-3 count. They may benefit from interventions focused on improving impulse control and executive functioning rather than a punitive-based system.

3. Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Children with ODD may see the counting system as a challenge to their autonomy, potentially leading to more defiance. These children might benefit from more collaborative or therapeutic approaches to behavior management.

4. Children with Trauma or Anxiety Disorders: Children who have experienced trauma or have high anxiety may respond negatively to the perceived power dynamic or sudden consequences. A more supportive and therapeutic approach might be needed to build trust and security.

In these cases, a more individualized, therapeutic approach with a focus on understanding underlying emotional or neurological challenges might be necessary.

... Read moreParenting AuDHD kids can be challenging, particularly when employing discipline strategies like 1-2-3 Magic. It’s essential to understand that while this approach can be effective for some, it may not suit every child. Research shows individualized techniques are often more impactful. For instance, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder often struggle with abstract concepts, indicating a need for concrete communication. Similarly, children diagnosed with ADHD might require additional support focusing on impulse control strategies. Collaboration with professionals can adapt methods to fit individual needs. Effective parenting also includes fostering positive emotional environments. Techniques such as mindfulness can help equip both parents and children with tools to navigate challenging behaviors. In this light, exploring alternatives to traditional methods, like social skills training or family therapy, can encourage a nurturing atmosphere, reinforcing trust and reducing anxiety in children. Engaging with local parenting groups and online forums can also provide additional support and resources. Understanding the individual traits of AuDHD children cultivates a successful parenting journey that embraces flexibility and awareness.
