Things I do with my AuDHD kids

We are homebodies at my house. Partially this is because we don’t have much money right now, and partially because we started recognizing our needs and making necessary accommodations.

When we do go out, it’s usually on days where things are less busy, for us this is often Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Since my daughter is homeschooled, we have the luxury of picking and choosing these less hectic days.

What activities do you do most as a family?

... Read moreFinding activities that truly resonate and support our AuDHD children can sometimes feel like a puzzle, but it’s so rewarding when you discover what clicks for them. From my own experience, it's not just about keeping them busy, but about providing outlets for their energy, sensory needs, and unique ways of engaging with the world. One of the biggest game-changers for us has been incorporating regular movement and exercise into our routine. For AuDHD kids, exercise isn’t just about physical health; it's a powerful tool for sensory regulation and emotional well-being. Activities that involve deep pressure, proprioceptive input (like pushing or pulling), or vestibular input (like swinging) can be incredibly grounding. I've found that even simple activities can make a huge difference. For example, a brisk walk in nature, especially along a leaf-covered forest trail, provides varied sensory input—the crunch of leaves, the smell of the earth, the visual stimulation of trees overhead. It’s amazing how much a change of scenery and some fresh air can help reset a busy mind. When it comes to the best hobbies for AuDHD, I always recommend thinking about what brings your child genuine joy and calm, rather than what’s popular. Our kids often thrive in quiet spaces and activities that allow them to explore at their own pace. We love hiking or being outside as a great way to regulate, and focusing on avoiding crowded trails makes a world of difference. Watching ducks by a body of water is a favorite, offering a peaceful, repetitive visual that can be very soothing. Beyond nature, structured play can be fantastic. Think about activities like building with LEGOs or Magna-Tiles, which offer repetitive motions and a clear goal. Artistic pursuits like painting, drawing, or even simple sculpting with playdough can be wonderful for self-expression and fine motor skill development. Music, whether it's listening to calming sounds or experimenting with simple instruments, can also provide a great sensory outlet. The key is to offer options without pressure, letting them lead. Designing effective "exercise programs" for neurodivergent children isn't about following a rigid plan from a PDF, but rather about creating opportunities for movement that are tailored to their individual needs and preferences. I aim for a variety of activities that provide different types of sensory input. For some, this might be a vigorous bike ride; for others, it could be yoga or swimming, which offer full-body engagement and sensory input from the water. What we look for are activities that help them expend energy in a constructive way, improve focus, and reduce anxiety. It's often about finding that sweet spot where they're challenged but not overwhelmed. My daughter, for example, loves climbing trees and exploring, which gives her excellent proprioceptive input and a sense of adventure. Ultimately, supporting AuDHD children means understanding their unique sensory profiles and communication styles. It's about patience, observation, and celebrating their strengths. Creating a home environment that is largely sensory-friendly, offering choices, and establishing predictable routines can provide a sense of security. It's a journey of learning together, finding those special moments that bring peace and connection to your family.

I am no stranger to dysregulation... I find my nervous system in this state (or close to it) several times a day. Deciding how to approach it depends on whether you are overstimulated, or understimulated. When overstimulated, it's often best to do anything you can to calm your body down. Whe
