recent movies i’ve seen

... Read moreHey everyone! You know how it is, sometimes you just stumble upon a movie that sticks with you, for better or worse! I've been on a bit of a movie-watching spree lately and wanted to share my thoughts on the last four films that really stood out. I love discovering new (or new-to-me) movies, especially those cult classics and hidden independent gems. Let's dive into some reviews! First up, the 2024 release 'Mr. Crocket.' The poster with the man in a bow tie hinted at something quirky, and it definitely had a *great start*! It felt like a *children's TV show gone wrong*, which was brilliantly unsettling initially. The first half built a fantastic, eerie atmosphere. However, I felt it *declined in the second half*, losing some of its initial charm and suspense. It had a unique premise, but couldn't quite maintain that momentum. Still, if you're into psychological horror with a twisted nursery rhyme vibe, it might be worth a look, even with its uneven pacing. Next, I delved into the vintage 'She Freak' from 1967. This was an experience! Honestly, for most of its runtime, I found it quite *boring*. The pacing was slow, and it felt like it dragged quite a bit. But let me tell you, that *last minute is good*! It completely changes your perception of the film and delivers a punch that almost makes the slow build-up worthwhile. The imagery of the woman with a monstrous face on the poster really comes to life in that final moment. If you have the patience for older, grindhouse-style independent films and a shocking payoff, give it a shot. Just be prepared for a slow burn! Then there was 'Beyond Re-Animator' from 2003. I went into this one with low expectations, given its age and the 'low budget' feel often associated with sequels in this franchise. But wow, it was *surprisingly good*! The effects, while not blockbuster-level, were creative and effective, especially considering the budget. The storyline kept me engaged, and Jeffrey Combs, as always, delivers a fantastic performance as the mad scientist. The iconic man holding a syringe perfectly encapsulates the film's madcap energy. It’s grisly, gory, and an absolute blast for fans of practical effects and over-the-top horror-comedy. Definitely a solid 4/5 for me! Finally, I watched 'Critters 4' (1992). Being a fan of the original Critters, I was curious. Unfortunately, I have to say it was a definite *downgrade from previous movies*. It felt quite boring for large portions. While it did have some good kills – the furry creatures are always fun in their destructive ways – the plot felt convoluted and lacked the charm and excitement of the earlier installments. It tries to take the Critters into space, which sounds cool, but the execution just didn't land. If you're a completist for the franchise, go for it, but don't expect the same level of fun as the first two! It's always a journey watching movies like these! Whether it's a new release like 'Mr. Crocket,' a classic like 'She Freak,' or a cult favorite sequel, there's always something to discover. What are some of the movies you've watched recently that surprised you, for better or worse? I’d love to hear your recommendations or thoughts on these films in the comments below! Happy watching, everyone!
