HELP: Caring🫶for a person with Alzheimer’s

#HelloLemon8 I am the caregiver for my 60 year old cousin who is diagnosed with early onset dementia/Alzheimer’s. I need HELP!

My cousin has progressively declined since March. When I begin as her caregiver she was showered, dressed and hair done before I arrived. Now she is unable to dress herself, remember to brush her teeth or put deodorant on.

Today when I arrived, she was anxiously waiting by the door. I could see the anguish on her face and felt the anxiety exuding from her.

She looked at me with wide eyes and said “All my bras are broken! All of them! They are all broken!”

I assured her I would figure it out and it will be ok.

I asked her to show me the bras. We walk upstairs to the bathroom and she grabs a bra, lifts it up high and says LOOK!

There was nothing wrong with them. They were just unhooked. She couldn’t understand how to put one on. I help put her bra on her ever since this incident and now guide her through each step of her morning hygiene routines.

If you have any tips or advice on caregiving for a client with Alzheimer’s please share.

... Read moreCaring for someone with Alzheimer's can be an overwhelming experience. It's essential to understand that every caregiver faces unique challenges as the disease progresses. One effective strategy is maintaining routine, which can help ease anxiety for both the caregiver and the person receiving care. Encouraging small, manageable tasks, such as asking your loved one to choose their outfit or pick a snack, can foster independence and a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, communication plays a crucial role. Use simple language and non-verbal cues, like gestures and facial expressions, to make interactions clearer. Remember that patience is vital—your loved one may not understand what you’re saying or may need extra time to respond. Furthermore, take time for self-care. Caregiving can lead to emotional and physical exhaustion, making it essential to find time for yourself, whether through hobbies, support groups, or even short breaks. Online forums and local support groups can provide valuable resources and a space to share experiences with others who are on the same journey. Exploring professional resources, such as in-home care assistance or adult day programs, can alleviate some of the caregiving burdens, allowing caregivers to focus on their loved ones without neglecting their own well-being. In seeking out additional knowledge about Alzheimer's and effective caregiving strategies, caregivers can feel equipped and resilient to confront the emotional complexities of caring for someone with this diagnosis.
