I never knew how my brother felt until…

My parents died two years ago and I always looked up to my brother and admired him. But after they died I found out the truth, my brother hates me and always has. I’m devastated and can’t believe he is not the person I thought he was for 50 plus years. How do I deal with this? Anyone in the same predicament? It’s only him and I left in our immediate family and now it’s only me. I feel so alone in the world.

... Read moreDiscovering that a sibling, especially one you've admired your whole life, harbors deep-seated hatred is a shock that reverberates through your entire being. Like the vintage photo of a smiling mother and baby, our memories can often mask a truth we were never ready to see. I never knew it until after my parents passed, and the realization that 'my brother hates me' has been truly devastating. Looking back now, with a heavy heart, I'm starting to see patterns I might have overlooked for years. Perhaps you've also wondered about the 'signs your brother doesn't like you.' For me, these signs were subtle, often disguised as teasing or competitive banter. There was always a slight edge to his jokes, a dismissive tone when I spoke about my achievements, and a lack of genuine interest in my life unless it somehow related to him. He was quick to criticize and slow to praise. I realize now that he rarely truly celebrated my successes, but was always quick to point out my flaws or downplay my efforts. These weren't just sibling squabbles; they were quiet indicators of a deeper, more painful truth that I, in my naive admiration, simply couldn't comprehend. It's profound how the death of our parents, meant to bring us closer in shared grief, instead shattered my perception of our bond. They were, in a way, the glue or perhaps the buffer that masked this underlying animosity. Without them, the carefully constructed facade crumbled, revealing the raw, unvarnished truth. The shared responsibility of grieving just seemed to amplify the existing resentment, pulling us further apart instead of uniting us. Suddenly, the person I thought I knew was gone, replaced by a stranger who openly expressed his disdain. The weight of this revelation, coupled with the fresh grief for my parents, is almost unbearable. The realization that 'my brother hates me' is a wound unlike any other. It leaves a hollow ache, a profound sense of loneliness. How do you even begin to process such a betrayal from the person you thought was your constant? The sense of abandonment is overwhelming, especially when he's the last immediate family member. It makes you question your entire family history, wondering if your childhood memories were just a fabrication. The fear of being truly alone in the world feels very real. While there's no easy answer, I'm learning to navigate this new, painful reality. Here's what I'm trying, and what I've heard from others who've faced a 'bro hates me' scenario: Allowing Yourself to Grieve: This isn't just about grieving your parents; it's also about grieving the loss of the ideal sibling relationship you thought you had. It's OK to mourn what you believed was true. Setting Boundaries: Protecting your emotional peace is paramount. This might mean limiting contact, or even cutting ties if the relationship is toxic. It's about self-preservation. Seeking Support: Don't go through this alone. Talk to trusted friends, find online communities (like this one on Lemon8), or seek professional help from a therapist. Sharing your story can be incredibly validating. Focusing on Self-Care: Rebuild your sense of self-worth outside of that relationship. Engage in hobbies, pursue passions, and remind yourself of your own value. Acceptance: Sometimes, acceptance of the situation, rather than relentlessly pursuing reconciliation, is the healthiest path forward. Not all relationships can be mended, and that's not a reflection of your worth. This journey is incredibly difficult, but please know you're not alone in feeling this way. So many of us carry unseen burdens from family dynamics. Finding strength within yourself and building new connections can help heal these deep wounds. We can find our own way forward, even when it feels like the world has left us stranded.

I said sorry for everything… until I noticed
I was the kind of person who’d say “sorry” when YOU bumped into me. I apologized for existing, for speaking, for having needs, even for feeling emotions. It wasn’t until someone close to me pointed it out: “You know you say sorry like, 10 times a conversation, right?” that I really started noticing
