Tteokbokki at home

Sometimes I want something fancy but without the effort and tteokbokki really makes it happen! I picked up a pack of fresh tteokbokki from 温州商场 Wenzhou Supermercados and tteokbokki sauce mix, kimchi Mandu 🥟 and bok Choi 🥬. I cooked up shiitake mushrooms, green onions and the bok Choi in sesame oil and boiled the tteokbokki for a few minutes, drained and added the sauce and veggies. I fried the Mandu til golden brown and served with sweet and sour sauce which helped balance the spiciness of the tteokbokki.

Which restaurant style dish should I make next?

... Read moreTteokbokki is a beloved Korean street food known for its chewy rice cakes and spicy, savory sauce made primarily from gochujang, a fermented chili paste. Making it at home is both satisfying and customizable. To elevate your homemade tteokbokki, consider adding a variety of vegetables like shiitake mushrooms, green onions, and bok choy sautéed in sesame oil, which brings an aromatic and rich flavor profile. In addition to tteokbokki, pairing it with kimchi mandu, which are Korean dumplings filled with fermented kimchi and vegetables, offers a delightful contrast in texture and taste. Fry the mandu until golden and serve with a sweet and sour sauce to balance the spiciness of the rice cakes. When preparing tteokbokki sauce, look for popular Korean brands like Sempio or Bibigo that offer gluten-free and non-GMO options, making the dish accessible for more dietary preferences. The sauce typically includes ingredients like Korean gochujang, soy sauce, garlic, and sugar to create that perfect balance of heat and sweetness. For those interested in vegan or vegetarian options, tteokbokki is naturally adaptable by choosing vegetable broth and skipping any fish-based ingredients. Adding fresh greens and mushrooms not only enhances nutrition but also adds delightful textures. If you're inspired to expand your Korean cooking repertoire beyond tteokbokki, dishes such as japchae (stir-fried glass noodles with vegetables), bibimbap (mixed rice bowl with assorted toppings), or Korean fried chicken are excellent choices to try next. Each offers a unique taste experience that complements the spicy richness of tteokbokki. Overall, cooking tteokbokki at home is a fun culinary adventure that brings the spicy sweetness of Korean street food right into your kitchen with minimal effort and maximum flavor.
