I missed the Festa della Madonna dei Miracoli this year. It’s the big feast in Mussomeli celebrating Maria Santissima dei Miracoli, Mussomeli’s patron saint. It commemorates a miracle from 1530, when a paralytic man travelling on a mule stopped under a tree, fell asleep, and woke up healed.
The townspeople traced this miracle to a sacred image of the Virgin Mary and Child that had been discovered nearby, not painted on wood or canvas, but mysteriously imprinted on a stone hidden among brambles. People believed that the healing came through the intercession of Mary connected to that image.
That discovery and the miracle together became the foundation of devotion to the Madonna dei Miracoli (“Our Lady of Miracles”). To honor it, the Santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli was later built, and the image is still preserved there today.
