Do We Really Owe Nothing to Anyone

Lately it feels like everyone’s running with this “I don’t owe anyone anything” mindset and honestly, it’s exhausting. Yeah, protect your peace, but you do owe people things.

Friends deserve effort, time, and empathy. Partners deserve energy, commitment, and reassurance. Even strangers deserve basic respect. And people who support you? They deserve gratitude.

This hyper-individualism + therapy-speak online is turning everyone into selfish robots. We’re forgetting that relationships require giving, not just taking.

Do you agree or do you think we really don’t owe anyone anything?

... Read moreIt's easy to get caught up in the belief that we owe no one anything, especially with the emphasis on personal boundaries and self-care seen everywhere today. However, adopting such an absolute stance can overlook the essential role that mutual support and contribution play in human connections. When we talk about owing something to others, it doesn’t necessarily mean debt or obligation in a burdensome sense. Instead, it’s about the natural give-and-take that nurtures healthy relationships. Friends, for example, thrive on effort and empathy—not because it's a duty, but because it cultivates trust and happiness for all involved. Partners invest time and reassurance to build a safe foundation for love to flourish. Even casual interactions with strangers benefit from basic respect and kindness, fundamentally enriching our social environment. And the people who help us—whether family, friends, co-workers, or mentors—deserve gratitude, which strengthens bonds and encourages generosity. Ignoring these social credits in favor of extreme self-focus risks alienation and loneliness. The rise of therapy language emphasizing personal boundaries sometimes blurs the balance, leading many to shut themselves off from the profound satisfaction found in mutual care. Moreover, this kind of hyper-individualism can transform relationships into transactional exchanges where only benefits are sought, turning people into 'selfish robots' as the original post notes. It's important to remember that relationships require vulnerability and giving, not just taking. Acknowledging what we owe others doesn’t mean sacrificing our well-being; it means recognizing the interconnectedness that enriches life. By blending self-respect with active empathy, we create communities that sustain and uplift everyone involved. Asking ourselves if we truly owe nothing to anyone invites a deeper conversation about the kind of world and relationships we want to build. So, while protecting your peace is vital, embracing the responsibilities we owe each other can lead to more meaningful, fulfilling connections—contrasting the exhausted individualism that often prevails today.
