THE BEST WAY TO WASH!

Like many of you, I used to just rinse my fruits under the tap and call it a day. But after learning about all the pesticides and dirt that can cling to our produce, especially delicate berries like strawberries, I knew I needed a better solution. That's when I discovered the amazing power of a simple, natural fruit wash using ingredients I already had in my kitchen: vinegar and baking soda! You might be thinking, 'Vinegar and baking soda? Really?' Yes! Individually, they're great cleaners, but together, they create a gentle yet powerful cleaning solution. Vinegar acts as a mild acid, helping to break down waxes and residues, while baking soda is a mild abrasive that helps lift dirt and grime without damaging the fruit. This combination is fantastic for tackling everything from surface dirt to unseen contaminants, making it an excellent vegetable wash too. Here’s how I get my produce sparkling clean every time: 1. Gather Your Supplies: You'll need a large bowl, cool water, distilled white vinegar, and baking soda. And of course, your beautiful fresh fruits – especially those gorgeous strawberries that tend to attract a lot of dirt! 2. Prepare the Soaking Solution: For every 2 cups (473 ml) of cool water, I typically add 1 cup (237 ml) of white vinegar. Then, I sprinkle in 1 teaspoon (6 g) of baking soda. You'll notice a gentle fizz – that's the two ingredients reacting, and it's perfectly normal! This simple solution is the secret to a thorough fruit and vegetable wash. 3. Submerge Your Fruit: Gently place your fruit into the bowl with the solution. Make sure they are fully submerged. I usually let my delicate strawberries soak for about 10-15 minutes. For firmer fruits or vegetables, you might go a little longer, up to 20 minutes. You’ll often be surprised by the cloudy water and residue left behind! 4. Rinse Thoroughly: This step is crucial! After soaking, drain the fruit and rinse them under cool running water for a good minute or two. You want to ensure all traces of the vinegar and baking soda solution are gone. Don't worry, your fruit won't taste like vinegar! 5. Dry Properly: Pat your fruit dry with a clean cloth or paper towel, or use a salad spinner for berries and greens. Excess moisture can shorten shelf life, so getting them adequately dry is important. This wash method truly helps keep my produce fresh longer! While I swear by this method for strawberries, it's also excellent for blueberries, grapes, apples, bell peppers, and even leafy greens. For delicate items, just be extra gentle during the rinsing and drying process. It's transformed how I prepare all my produce!
