I have had a few people ask what the Disney college Program is and so I thought I would give my take on what I think the Disney College Program is.
To me the Disney College Program is the opportunity to learn communication skills as well as adult skills (like paying rent and grocery shopping) while working for the Walt Disney World Company. There are so many role options of people applying to the college program which gives variety in the opportunity that college students will have!
Everyone's experiences here are different. But from what I can tell, a lot of people have amazing stories to tell by the end of it!
I'm excited to see where my role as a character attendant will take me with the company in the future and can't wait to see what the future has in store.
... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about the Disney College Program (DCP) and might be wondering, 'Is it really worth it?' From my own journey, I can honestly say it's an experience unlike any other! Beyond just working at Walt Disney World, it's a deep dive into personal growth and professional development.
Many people ask, 'What exactly do you do in the Disney College Program?' The truth is, there's a huge variety of roles, and each one offers a unique perspective. While I got to experience the magic as a character attendant – which was incredible and taught me so much about guest interaction and quick thinking – there are countless other amazing opportunities. Imagine being part of the attractions team, making sure guests have the safest and most thrilling rides, or even joining custodial, where you're truly a hero keeping the parks pristine. I've seen friends thrive in merchandise, learning retail skills, and in food & beverage, mastering hospitality. Each role, whether it's character attendant, custodial, or attractions, provides hands-on experience in a world-renowned entertainment company.
One of the biggest takeaways for me was definitely the 'adulting' aspect. Moving to Florida, paying rent, and grocery shopping for the first time felt like a huge leap! It taught me invaluable lessons in budgeting, time management, and self-sufficiency. You learn to balance your work schedule with your personal life, navigate transportation, and manage your finances – essential skills they don't always teach you in college. It's truly a crash course in independent living, but you're surrounded by thousands of other students going through the same thing, which makes it feel less daunting.
Beyond the practical skills, the DCP is also an incredible incubator for soft skills. I learned to communicate effectively with diverse guests from all over the world, handle unexpected situations with grace, and work seamlessly as part of a large team. These aren't just 'Disney skills'; they're universal competencies that look fantastic on any resume. It’s definitely more than just a college program; for many, it functions like an intensive internship, offering real-world experience that sets you apart.
And let's not forget the friendships! The OCR mentioned making so many friendships that will last a lifetime, and it's absolutely true. You bond with people from all walks of life, sharing magical moments and challenging times. These connections become your support system, your adventure companions, and often, your lifelong friends. Living and working together creates a unique camaraderie that's hard to find anywhere else.
So, if you're considering the Disney College Program, know that it's an investment in yourself. It’s an opportunity to learn, grow, and create memories that will truly last a lifetime. Prepare for hard work, incredible fun, and a whole lot of magic!
